‘We’re saying goodbye’ – Player to sign for Birmingham City, doesn’t appear he’ll be missed much
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessJeremy Sarmiento joined Cremonese on loan from Brighton in the summer. The move hasn’t worked out and Birmingham City are now closing in on the Ecuadorian.
A week ago, it seemed as if Middlesbrough would land the versatile attacker. Lorenzo Lepore was confident that the 23-year-old had given his approval to the switch.
On Tuesday, it became clear that Sarmiento’s next destination would be Birmingham City. He will return to Brighton soon and then seal a switch to the Championship side.
CalcioCremonese cover the move and appear quite happy the attacking midfielder is leaving their local club.
‘We’re saying goodbye’, state CalcioCremonese, with the Serie A side already hunting the market for a replacement. The Ecuador international’s departure is just awaiting formalisation, amidst the belief that Sarmiento would play more regularly at Birmingham City.
At Cremonese, he played only seven times in Serie A, totalling less than 140 minutes. His last appearance came in November against Pisa. Since then, he hasn’t even made it to the squad multiple times.
In December, he had also picked up a muscle injury, presumably in training considering he wasn’t getting minutes. The adventure has not worked out and all involved appear glad it’s coming to an end prematurely.
Birmingham City arrival has good Championship experience
Cremonese finished fourth in Serie B last season and were promoted via playoffs. They’re currently a rather respectable 12th in Serie A, and one arrival from English football has helped the club. Jamie Vardy arrived as a free agent, and the 39-year-old has five goals and an assist so far.
Sarmiento has previously made a mark in the Championship, playing 75 times for Ipswich, Burnley and West Brom. With Birmingham City looking to push above the mid-stable spots, he would come in as a proven signing who also has a fair amount of Premier League experience.
And after his Italian experience, he also has a point to prove.
