“We knew he’s important” – Director hints why Scott McTominay better at Napoli than Manchester United
by Sport Witness · Sport WitnessThanks to an Inter Milan wobble, Napoli currently find themselves three points clear at the top of Serie A. One of the biggest reasons for Antonio Conte’s side having a chance of winning the league is Scott McTominay and he’s quickly become an icon in Naples.
Napoli beat Torino 2-0 on Sunday evening, and it was the Scotland international who scored both of his side’s goals. Whenever he finds the back of the net, which he’s done 11 times in Serie A so far, or gets his latest Man of the Match award, the question of Manchester United selling him rears its head again.
The Old Trafford club is questioned for letting McTominay leave, and it’s also repeatedly suggested £25m was too low of a price for Manchester United to accept.
Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has once again been asked about the transfer, and he hinted that making McTominay one of Napoli’s most important players, and building around him, suits the midfielder better than the lesser role he had at Manchester United.
TMW quote Manna as saying: “There is too much work in daily life, that’s why it is difficult to watch so many footballers. Before I watch him, there’s the a job of the staff. Someone like McTominay does not need to be discovered, we knew he was an important footballer. He just had to be put at the centre of a specific project.”
Manna intends to look towards the Premier League for more recruitment: “The best league in the world, with the best players in the world. The level is high, intensity, tactics, technique. There are many components that can have an impact in Italy.”
