“The time will come” – Manchester City player looking forward to transfer meeting

by · Sport Witness

Manuel Akanji left Manchester City to join Inter Milan on loan last summer. Things are going well for him, as the Nerazzurri inch towards a possible double.

As things stand, Cristian Chivu’s side are four points away from winning the Scudetto. They also find themselves in a Coppa Italia semi-final, as they face Como in the second leg this week.

Throughout the campaign, Akanji has been key for Inter. He made a high-profile error against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League but that hasn’t been a big stain on his reputation.

He has featured in every league game since his arrival, with Sport Witness previously covering Inter’s intentions to sign him permanently.

The Switzerland international has now opened up about his future, giving a lot away about his desires.

Akanji waiting for key meeting

The centre-back spoke to Sportmediaset in a detailed interview. He was asked about his move to Inter, his time under Chivu and intentions for his future.

He made it clear that the Nerazzurri appeared to suit him more than AC Milan.

“I spoke to Milan in the summer, but I thought Inter was a more suitable destination for me. I’d say the choice worked out. My agent negotiated with the club, and it worked out well.”

The centre-back revealed that players at Inter made it easy for him to settle.

“All the guys and the coach made it very easy for me to fit into the team. I feel great playing here, in both positions: midfield, right back, and in the back three. I’ve had a really great season, and we’ll try to finish it strong.”

The 30-year-old also revealed that he will have a meeting about his future at the end of the season.

“If and when we win these trophies, the time will come to sit down and decide how to move forward. I feel great here, but I don’t think it’s the right time to talk about it. It will come soon, but I’m focused on playing well and then we’ll see.”

Deal set to go through

Previously, it has been suggested that Inter’s obligation to buy Akanji permanently will come into play if they win Serie A. As part of that, the defender will also have to play 50 percent of the games in the competition.

So far, that is how things are going and we could be two games away from the permanent deal to be executed.

Manchester City will earn €15m from the sale, which will go down as a decent deal. They paid €20m to sign him from Borussia Dortmund and Akanji won a Champions League title with the Citizens.

He clearly offered significant value when he was at the club, also featuring in midfield at one point.

His exit will go down as a capital gain.
