Southampton player warned he’s on World Cup ‘red list’ – Fans want him to wake up
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessCyle Larin needs to continue impressing at Southampton, as Canada could leave him out of the World Cup at present.
That’s according to journalist Alberto Mora, speaking to Cadena SER. He’s the creator of Canadian soccer news channel Golazo Canada, so knows all about the Southampton man.
Larin found himself in the headlines this week after her made a flying start to life at Southampton. He joined them on loan in January from Mallorca, who are hoping it’s made permanent.
Fortunately for them the striker made an instant impact with a goal three minutes into his debut against Watford. That secured all three points for the Saints.
It was a ‘dream’ start for the 30-year-old, who has struggle to find his feet in recent years. He joined Mallorca in a €7.5m deal in 2023, then moved on loan to Feyenoord in September last year before joining Southampton in January.
Southampton player has a lot to gain
Larin is very much looking to get his career back on track, particularly in a World Cup year. Canada are one of the hosts of the tournament and he’ll be keen to be a part of it.
He’s made 87 appearances for his country since his debut in 2013, with 30 goals to boot. But he only managed one appearance for them last year and hasn’t scored since October 2024. That’s put the Southampton loanee on the risk list, according to Mora.
“Canadians hope he’ll wake up. He’s one of the two or three players on the red list who could miss the World Cup,” he said.
“He doesn’t adapt to any team he goes to. At 30, he should be at his peak, but he’s plummeted. The mental aspect is bothering him a lot because he has many forwards putting a lot of pressure on him. He won’t be an undisputed starter.”
