Club ‘making moves’ as Wolves man is made ‘main target’ – Interest isn’t new

by · Sport Witness

Napoli are ‘finally making moves’ to improve their midfield this summer and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ star Joao Gomes is their ‘main target’.

That’s according to journalist Nicolo Ceccarini for Tuttomercatoweb. He reports that the Wolves man has been put at the top of Napoli’s midfield wish list.

After a disastrous defence of their title, the current Italian champions are expected to be busy reshaping their squad this summer. They are currently 11 points behind Inter Milan, sitting third in Serie A.

Injuries have caused major problems for them, and the club will need to refresh the squad, perhaps to keep Antonio Conte on board.

The Italian club wants reinforcements in midfield, and Ceccarini reports that Gomes sits at the top of the list.

Wolves star wanted

According to his information, Napoli are making moves to strengthen their midfield this summer. and, Wolves midfielder is ‘the main target’ in that regard. There’s no further information about the 25-year-old than that.

But Sport Witness have reported on Napoli’s interest in the midfielder for months. Indeed, there’s been numerous reports since the January transfer window alone.

For example, on 11 January, Sport Witness covered a report describing the Wolves midfielder as a transfer waiting to happen. At that point, the club valued him at €40m.

Efforts since January transfer window

A report three days later theorised that Wolves likely relegation would make the transfer easier this summer. It was then confirmed two days ago that the Wolves midfielder remained a target for Napoli this summer.

Now Ceccarini has added to that, insisting that he’s the main target for Conte’s side. Given he also states that they’re finally making moves, it suggests that there’s something going on behind the scenes.

Indeed, it would not be surprising if there are reports about contacts with Gomes’ agents sooner rather than later. Even if that’s not happening right now, Gomes’ future appears to be away from Molineux.
