‘Excellent news’ for club as ‘substantial’ Sunderland transfer clause could kick in
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessDutch side NEC Nijmegen are watching Robin Roefs’ summer at Sunderland closely as they are set to benefit from a ‘substantial’ sell-on clause.
Voetbal 4 U cover the 23-year-old goalkeeper today and how a €70m move this summer could benefit his old club massively.
NEC sold Roefs to Sunderland last year in a €10.5m deal, a ‘staggering’ fee for them at the time. But he has performed so well for the Black Cats since then, it now looks like a bargain.
Roefs is now valued at €25m but being linked with a potential €70m move to Chelsea this summer. They’re not the only big club who are watching.
Excellent news for NEC Nijmegen
While that would be a major move for Sunderland, it would also be ‘excellent news’ for NEC Nijmegen.
That’s because they negotiated a ‘substantial’ sell-on clause during the transfer talks with Sunderland last summer. This clause, reportedly, entitles them to a full 10% of any profit Sunderland make. /
Based on the figures mentioned, Sunderland would make a €58.2m profit. NEC would then pocket another €5.82m from the deal. But the profit doesn’t stop there.
NEC are also entitled to a solidarity contribution amounting to a substantial €3.09m, should Robin Roefs complete a transfer worth €68.7m. When combined with the proceeds from the initial sale, NEC’s total earnings from Sunderland for Roefs would exceed €19m.
Will Sunderland agree a Roefs transfer?
The question is whether Sunderland will sell Robin Roefs this summer. Losing him after his impressive first season would be a major blow.
But the prospect of making a major profit on a player who cost just over €10m will be appealing for the Black Cats, who will likely want to spend big again this summer.
Either way, NEC will be watching closely. If Roefs does depart the Stadium of Light this summer, the Dutch club appear set to benefit massively.
