Juan Sebastián Verón explains how he got into brawl whilst at Manchester United

Juan Sebastián Verón has detailed how he ended up in a brawl during his time at Manchester United, all thanks to some heavy drinking and Argentinian songs.

TyC Sports report comments from the former Manchester United midfielder today in an interview with former rugby star Agustín Creevy.

The Argentine, who has lived a football life packed with trophies, pressure and unforgettable nights, was happy to detail one of his lesser-known stories.

Bar hopping chaos

Juan Sebastián Verón sets the scene as someone who can picture every detail of a night filled with drama.

The Manchester United man was out partying alongside Agustín Pichot and Felipe Contepomi. They rugby pair were also based in England at that point. A festive reunion was therefore planned.

“Back then, it was all about hopping from one bar to another and drinking as much beer as humanly possible,” explained Verón.

“So, I told them: ‘There’s this thing going on.’ Agustín showed up with Felipe Contepomi, and I said: ‘I’ll get you guys onto the bus.’”

The night was supposed to be simple: drinks, laughs, and a bit of Argentine camaraderie in the middle of an English winter. But then came the spark.

Argentine reaction

At some point in the night, an unnamed person grabbed a microphone and began a loud chant of “England! England!”.

This prompted an immediate and strong response from the Argentines.

“We snatched the mic away from him and started chanting for Argentina, and then the punches started flying,” explained Verón.

“It was a free‑for‑all involving the Irish, the Dutch, the English… and I’m not sure if Felipe swiped some guy’s hat or what exactly happened,” he added, laughing.

Now, of course, it’s all a matter of the past. With his partying days long behind him, the former midfielder can now laugh about such events.

Manchester United fans, though, might wonder where such fight was on the pitch.

If Juan Sebastián Verón had shown some of it, perhaps his time at Old Trafford would be remembered more fondly than it is.
