Arsenal in for 21-year-old Serie A star – €40m deal there for Gunners
by Pedro Reinert · Sport WitnessArsenal are continuing their search for another centre-forward as they prepare for a summer that could reshape their attacking line. The club are expected to reinforce that position, especially with uncertainty surrounding the future of Gabriel Jesus.
Recruitment staff have been watching several leagues. Recently, attention has increasingly turned towards Serie A. One player now appearing on their radar is Bologna’s Santiago Castro.
The 21-year-old striker has enjoyed a strong season in Italy. As a result, he has quietly attracted interest from clubs in multiple markets, and one of them is Brazilian side Flamengo – who recently signed Lucas Paquetá from West Ham United.
However, in the process of exploring a possible move, Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte claimed the local club “discovered” that Arsenal are also actively tracking the Argentine striker.
Arsenal tracking Bologna forward
Arsenal’s interest does not seem new. The story says the club have been following Santiago Castro since last season, when he began to establish himself in Bologna’s first team.
His development accelerated during the current campaign. Castro has played 31 matches in all competitions so far. In that time he has scored 10 goals and provided two assists.
Beyond the numbers, the Argentine has impressed scouts with his style. Castro is a mobile striker who presses defenders aggressively. He constantly attacks space and offers presence inside the penalty area.
His performances in European competition also helped raise his profile. In particular, displays in the Europa League and strong outings in Serie A pushed him further onto recruitment lists across the continent.
€40m valuation and Premier League attention
Interest in Santiago Castro is not limited to North London. Towards the end of last year several English clubs were already monitoring his situation.
Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Aston Villa were all reported to have looked at the forward.
Bologna are aware of that attention and have set a clear benchmark. The Italian club are understood to value Castro at around €40m (£34m).
That figure is far beyond the financial reach of the Brazilian side whose interest collided with Arsenal’s. However, it sits firmly within the range of Premier League deals for emerging attacking talent.
The situation therefore becomes one to monitor closely. If Arsenal really decide to move for another striker this summer, Castro is already on the list of options developing across Europe.
