Chelsea now in picture for West Ham star – New twist to Hammers soap opera

by · Sport Witness

Chelsea have quietly entered the Lucas Paquetá picture, adding another twist to a West Ham story that keeps growing.

Brazilian journalist Renan Moura reports that Chelsea are interested in Lucas Paquetá and could open real competition with Flamengo during the winter window. That interest comes at a key moment, with the midfielder actively looking for clarity about his next step.

The same report says Flamengo have already made their first move. The Brazilian club approached West Ham United, but the English side rejected the opening offer.

Even so, Flamengo do not plan to step back. They are expected to return with higher numbers and could push their bid towards £34m (€40m) to bring Paquetá back in 2026.

But Chelsea’s interest changes the tone of the talks. While Paquetá feels a strong emotional pull towards Flamengo, people close to him believe staying in Europe longer could make sense. Especially at a “bigger” club.

At 28, he remains in his prime and attractive to clubs that can act quickly.

Chelsea may be being used to pressure Flamengo

West Ham continue to control the situation. Paquetá has a contract until June 2027, which gives the club leverage. However, the player’s desire to leave England has grown. That feeling links to his frustration with how he believes he has been treated since the betting investigation began.

That self-perception of his treatment, especially with regards to how he’s now treating West Ham, may well be somewhat skewed. Indeed, there’s every chance the midfielder is using it as an excuse to walk out on the Hammers at a time they dearly need him.

From Chelsea’s side, the timing looks interesting. With Flamengo pushing and West Ham holding firm, a clear move from Stamford Bridge could reshape the entire discussion.

Whether the Stamford Bridge club are being used to pressure Flamengo is unclear. Chelsea tend to go for younger players, and with Paquetá turning 29 in the summer he doesn’t fit that mould.
