‘On the verge of leaving’ – Belief player could join Sunderland soon

Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin could join Sunderland in the winter market, according to Saturday’s edition of Bild.

The Switzerland international had an opportunity to move to England last summer when Leicester City showed up.

In August, the German press reported a Foxes’ loan offer. The Bundesliga side were open to negotiating if a purchase option or obligation were included in the deal.

A move to the King Power Stadium never materialised in the end. Sunderland may now be an option for him.

Omlin is still at the German club and hasn’t played a single minute this season. He has less than 18 months left on his contract but doesn’t seem to have a future at Gladbach.

Bild’s report focuses on Gladbach players who are ‘on the verge of leaving’ in January.

Their sporting director, Rouven Schröder, has confirmed the need to trim the squad in this window.

“We definitely want to reduce the squad size, that’s the task. We can expect more to happen,” he said.

The German club have allowed Tomáš Čvančara to join Celtic earlier this week. The report say six more players could follow him and the list includes the 32-year-old.

Bild points out the stopper is attracting interest from Sunderland and add that it’s possible for him to move to the Stadium of Light. Whether Gladbach will be successful in getting rid of him remains to be seen.

The Black Cats signed Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen in August 2025. He has been the first choice for Régis Le Bris as the Dutchman has started in every league game so far.

If Omlin were to join the Premier League side, he certainly has to settle for a backup role.

In addition to Roefs, Le Bris now has Anthony Patterson and Simon Moore at his disposal. It wouldn’t make sense for Sunderland to sign a new goalkeeper unless one of them were to move elsewhere.
