Manchester United officials mocked over transfer trip – Assist machine target on agenda
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessLast week, Sport Witness picked up claims from TuttoSport about Manchester United’s interest in Federico Dimarco.
There was confidence the Red Devils would scout the wing-back during Inter Milan’s game against Juventus at the San Siro.
The Italian started and did quite well in the 3-2 win. The game was controversial but it led to the UK press also reporting the scouting mission – likely picking up the information from Italy.
While mentioning Manchester United, TuttoSport had also pushed the idea of the Italian’s renewal at Inter. Work was ongoing to make it happen, with Beppe Marotta keen on keeping the wing-back.
Now, the Nerazzurri’s stance is becoming clearer.
Manchester United swatted away
L’Interista report on the Italy international, who has been an assist machine this season. He’s racked up 14 assists, which is the second most in the top five European leagues.
The outlet state Inter aren’t worried about Manchester United’s scouting trip at all. They have an excellent relationship with Dimarco’s entourage (RocNation) and there is mutual willingness to sign a new contract.
That deal is likely to run until 2030, with the left-footer’s wages to rise to €5.5m per season.
Mockery is also aimed at Manchester United. While Michael Carrick’s side had the pleasure of watching Dimarco against Juve, ‘one phone call was enough’ to push the club away.
That isn’t to say contact was made between the two clubs. It’s one way of saying the Red Devils shouldn’t have organised the trip when a call was enough for rejection.
Dimarco deal would require big money
If the Italy international does sign a new deal, his transfer would require a lot of money. That isn’t just because of the contract length but also because of how good he is.
Under Cristian Chivu, he has looked more like himself as Dimarco is using his crossing ability to perfection. Under Simone Inzaghi, he was a bit more held back by responsibilities around dictating possession.
He is now 28 and at the peak of his powers. This is probably the best chance of landing him but the way things are going, he may not be interested.
Dimarco is a product of Inter’s youth academy and seems to have quite a deep bond with the league leaders.
