Loan disaster for Manchester United – Player set to return to Old Trafford
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessAndré Onana initially lost his place in Manchester United’s starting XI to Altay Bayındır at the start of the season.
The goalkeeper dropped further down the pecking order with Senne Lammens’ arrival at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp on summer deadline day. Manchester United then let him Onana join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal.
Onana has kept four clean sheets and conceded 29 goals from 19 matches in all competitions for the Turkish club.
Drop in Manchester United man’s form
The Cameroon international has been under criticism for his recent dip in form and Takvim now provide the latest.
Onana had a good start to his Süper Lig career before his performances dropped in recent weeks, resulting in criticism. This intensified following the Turkish club’s 2-3 defeat at the hands of Fenerbahçe.
According to the newspaper, the Manchester United player has received support from his current teammates and Trabzonspor’s coaching staff.
In fact, Trabzonspor manager Fatih Tekke had a private meeting with the 29-year-old to express his confidence.
The manager reportedly told Onana: ‘We trust you. You are one of the leading players in this team. Everyone goes through unlucky periods. You are one of the best in Europe.’
Tekke’s meeting, as per Takvim, was to ‘boost the morale’ of the Red Devils stopper.
Uncertain future for Manchester United player
Kuzey Ekspres, an outlet local to Trabzonspor, also share their take on the Cameroonian’s recent poor form and Tekke’s private meeting.
Fenerbahçe had only three shots on target and each one resulted in a goal.
According to Kuzey Ekspres, the coach has privately demanded Onana recover both mentally and physically, after a ‘sharp decline’ in his form. Tekke is also considering the possibility of dropping him from the lineup.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan recently stated his side aren’t a priority for Onana’s future plans. In addition to this, the cost of retaining him would also be high.
In short, the stopper’s high salary and declined form means he won’t stay at Trabzonspor beyond this season. Onana will return to Manchester United, who have to find a solution in the summer.
Sport Witness recently covered Italian claims of Onana’s agent visiting Inter Milan over a potential summer move.
