‘Realistic chance’ of signing West Ham player after January failure

by · Sport Witness

West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez continues to be on Ajax’s transfer agenda.

That’s according to Soccer News, who cover the Dutch club’s interest and the possibility of securing his services.

The Mexico international spent four years at Ajax before leaving them for West Ham in August 2023.

Last summer, the Hammers let the midfielder join Fenerbahçe on loan with an option to buy reportedly set at €22m. In November, Sport Witness covered Turkish claims that the figure is too high for the Yellow Canaries.

Ajax failed signing West Ham man

The Eredivisie side had looked at the 28-year-old in the winter market. On January 22nd, Sport Witness relayed news from the Netherlands of Ajax director Marijn Beuker making a trip to Istanbul for a meeting with Álvarez and his agent.

A move never materialised because Fenerbahçe director Devin Özek confirmed there was no plan to let him leave in the mid-season window.

Claims from Turkey reported a late offer from Ajax but the Dutch press dismissed it. The West Ham owned player has been struggling with injuries limiting his game time with the Istanbul club.

He played 1,125 minutes from 17 matches in all competitions for Fenerbahçe and is now on the sidelines with an ankle injury. Earlier this month, the Mexican underwent surgery and there’s confidence he will be fit on time for the World Cup.

Soccer News insist Fenerbahçe are unlikely to make his stay permanent due to his injury concern and N’Golo Kanté’s arrival. If this is were to happen, the midfielder will have to return to the Premier League side.

Álvarez could return to Ajax

In that case, Ajax could come forward again to try and sign Álvarez after this season. The search for an experienced midfielder hasn’t been successful and Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff could launch a new attempt in the summer.

This is where the West Ham man comes into the picture. After the January failure, Soccer News say the ‘situation looks more favourable’ in the next window. This is because he’s unlikely to continue in Turkey due to injuries and fresh competition from Kanté.

If Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were to cooperate, Ajax have a ‘realistic chance’ of securing Álvarez’s services. This, however, depends on the Eredivisie side meeting the financial request of both the Mexican and West Ham.
