Rangers: ‘Complete flop’ edging towards Ibrox transfer

by · Sport Witness

On Monday morning, we covered claims from Germany of Rangers interest in VfL Wolfsburg’s Andreas Skov Olsen.

The 26-year-old moved to the Bundesliga club almost exactly a year ago, and Danny Röhl’s side have now made contact to bring him to Rangers. The Scottish Premiership club have opened talks to bring in the Dane, although it wasn’t made clear who those talks were with.

Bild, the biggest selling newspaper in Germany, have now given their take on Rangers interest in Skov Olsen. In their typical style, the headline reads: ‘Glasgow Rangers are chasing a Bundesliga flop’

The newspaper aren’t exactly Skov Olsen’s biggest fans: This misunderstanding proved costly. A year ago, VfL Wolfsburg signed Danish striker Andreas Skov Olsen (26) from Club Brugge for a hefty €14m. His contract ran until 2029! But Skov Olsen was a complete flop. He never established himself as a regular starter, scoring only three goals and providing one assist in a total of 32 appearances.’

So far this season the Rangers target has made 10 appearances, but he’s only had around 450 minutes in total. More concerningly, the winger’s last appearance was three minutes against Werder Bremen in November.

Even the second half of last season, after he’d moved from Club Brugge, was miserable in Germany. However, his last full season in Belgium had much prettier numbers.

In the 23/24 campaign, the Rangers target played 50 matches for Club Brugge. Across those he scored an impressive 26 goals and added eight assists.

Rangers in talks, good deal surely available

Bild state that according to their own updated information, Rangers are in negotiations. Talks between Röhl’s side and VfL Wolfsburg are ongoing.

Wolfsburg will have to accept a ‘significant financial loss’, with it believed they’ll be lucky to get a little over half what they paid. That suggests a deal somewhere between €7m and €9m.

At one point, Skov Olsen was linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur.

Now it’s for Rangers to decide how much they want to take this gamble. Given how far out of the picture Skov Olsen is at Wolfsburg, maybe it’s worth trying for a loan with an option.

Danny Röhl was heavily linked with taking over at VfL Wolfsburg in the summer. Perhaps he did a little research on their squad at the time, leading to this Rangers interest.
