Manager “keeping an eye on” Burnley man – Could be given surprise chance
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessNetherlands boss Ronald Koeman is keeping an eye on Burnley striker Zian Flemming ahead of the World Cup.
That’s according to analyst Hans Kraay Jr. He’s revealed the Netherlands scouting efforts to ESPN, via Voetbal Primeur.
Koeman has a decision to make ahead of the summer over who he chooses over his striker options for the summer tournament.
The Netherlands boss has regularly rotated his forward options across this year, with Memphis Depay currently first choice but the likes of Wout Weghorst, Brian Brobbey, Donyell Malen and Emmanuel Emegha all given a chance at various points.
Flemming has not been on the list as yet. That’s despite a tally of five goals in 14 games in the Premier League for Burnley this season, despite not being a regular starter for Scott Parker’s side.
Those are good numbers, particularly for a side who are currently battling in the Premier League relegation zone. It’s been a continuation of his good form from last season, in which he managed 14 goals in 37 games for the Clarets.
He’s yet to make an appearance for the Netherlands, but according to Kraay Jr. they are keeping an eye on the Burnley forward.
“For me, there’s no discussion, for anyone,” he said, referring to Memphis Depay’s starting place. “He’s not wandering around anymore.”
“Some people consider the Brazilian league a weak league, but they’ll happily kick you into the lamppost there. There are quite a few decent defenders there. Memphis is doing well there too.
“Weghorst is a great pinch-hitter, Koeman is keeping an eye on Brobbey, Emegha has pace, and he’s also keeping an eye on Flemming, every week.
“A fresh, fit young man. That’s not groundbreaking news. He won’t be starting in the first team either, but Koeman is keeping an eye on him.”
