Agreement reached with Sunderland player and Black Cats for January exit
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessSunderland signed Arthur Masuaku on a free transfer after Beşiktaş released him at the end of last season. The left-back’s decision to move to the Stadium of Light in August 2025 hasn’t worked out well so far.
Régis Le Bris limited the DR Congo international to 137 minutes from three league games. This has not at all pleased him.
On Boxing Day, Foot RDC stated the 32-year-old plans to leave Sunderland in the winter market. Masuaku wants to join a club that can offer him regular football, to be in better shape for the World Cup qualifiers in March.
Trabzonspor have rejected an opportunity to sign him in this window. Standard Liège had also looked to sign him on loan and wanted the Black Cats to cover his full salary. They haven’t made progress so far.
The former West Ham United man could be on his way to France. That’s according to Foot Mercato, and they have a fresh report on RC Lens’ interest in Masuaku.
The Ligue 1 side saw Deiver Machado leave them for FC Nantes, and his exit has seen them look for a replacement. The focus is now on the Sunderland player, and they are looking to sign him on a loan deal until the end of this season.
According to Foot Mercato, Lens have found an agreement with the fullback. They add the French club have also reached an agreement with Le Bris’ side for a six-month loan deal.
There’s no mention of whether Lens have secured a purchase option or an obligation with Sunderland. He could travel soon for medical tests and to sign the contract with his new club.
Foot Mercato insist Masuaku’s experience and leadership can make him a key player at Lens. This move would allow him to try and get more playing time in the second half of the season.
