Chelsea ‘gigantic salary’ to secure signing – Blues have clear plan for transfer
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessChelsea are one of the clubs in the picture to sign FC Twente’s Ruud Nijstad in the summer.
The 18-year-old’s progress at the Dutch side has attracted the attention of a few clubs like Chelsea.
He came through the ranks of the Eredivisie side’s youth system and climbed to their first team in October 2025.
The centre-back lost his place for close to two months between November and January. However, he regained his place and hasn’t missed a single league game since January 24th.
His Eredivisie stats this season are as follows:
| League 2025/26 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appearances | 16 | |||
| Starts | 13 | |||
| Total minutes | 1251 | |||
| Minutes per game | 78 | |||
| Interceptions per game | 0.5 | |||
Last month, Brighton & Hove Albion scout Bert Konterman revealed he’s encouraged Fabian Hürzeler’s side to sign the player.
Chelsea among European clubs chasing transfer
There have been no claims of Brighton & Hove Albion interest, while Twente Insite now cover the latest on Chelsea and other clubs, and FC Twente’s plans.
Ruud Nijstad turned 18 years of age in January, making him eligible to sign more than a three-year contract.
Journalist Paul Lassche reports there’s been contact with his camp over an extension.
“They are still in talks. At that age, they’re not allowed to sign for more than three years. So, an extension isn’t possible either, because the first contract was already for three years,” he said.
Twente Insite, after relaying this, share their own take on the interested parties. The Netherlands U19 international has a ‘difficult choice’ to make because Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AS Roma are all interested.
These clubs can offer a ‘gigantic salary’ to tempt him to join them but may not offer regular minutes like Twente.
Liam Rosenior’s side plan is to buy him and immediately send the Dutchman back on loan to Twente for another season. This would allow him to continue his development and also enjoy regular game time next season.
Whether the Blues’ clear plan is enough to convince the player to pick them remains to be seen.
Contract, value and agent info
Ruud Nijstad will have a year left on his contract at the end of this season and his value, as per Transfermarkt is €8m.
Agency Essel Sports Management, owned by agents Steinar Dietz and Bas Schothorst, are managing him.
Without an extension, FC Twente could be forced to sell him in the summer and Chelsea or another club can take advantage of this to sign him for cheap.
