“Would love to” – Tottenham star talks up transfer dream despite admitting it’s ‘unfair’ on Spurs
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessTottenham Hotspur‘s Pedro Porro confirms transfer approaches before signing a new contract with the Premier League side in June.
The Spain international insists he has a big dream of returning to his country despite having a long-term contract until 2031, with an option for another year.
Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation last season and invested heavily in the summer. They also offered Porro, Micky van de Ven, Antonín Kinský and Lucas Bergvall extensions.
The right-back, who won the World Cup with La Roja in July, has made five appearances for Spurs this season.
Tottenham star Real Madrid and Barca target
Pedro Porro’s renewal hasn’t stopped reports linking him to Real Madrid and Barcelona. On October 13th, we relayed news he believes that the north London club isn’t the best place for him next season.
The La Liga winners are closely monitoring the 27-year-old as he wants to leave Spurs. Besides Barcelona, their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, are also in the picture to sign him. In the summer, Los Blancos lost Rodri to Hansi Flick’s side.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered a report from Spain explaining that Real Madrid want to sign the fullback, as revenge on Barcelona for missing out on Rodri.
The Tottenham Hotspur star has now given an interview to Cadena Ser‘s El Larguero. He talked about Spurs’ start, Real Madrid links, his transfer dream and other topics.
Spurs’ love and affection
Pedro Porro is happy to have received an improved contract at Tottenham Hotspur and believes he would have secured a much better deal had he waited until after the World Cup.
“The club gave me the option to renew before the World Cup without knowing what was going to happen. It was a very nice gesture,” he said.
“Afterwards, they gave me a great tribute; I feel very loved, and that’s very important to me. They’ve given me a good contract, although if I had waited until after the World Cup, I would have gotten more.”
When asked whether he had received offers in the summer, Porro explained: “I finalised my renewal before the World Cup to be at ease during the tournament, because that greatly influences performance.”
“There were rumours, but I was focused on doing well for my country. If there’s real interest, they call you directly, and that didn’t happen. There were clubs that enquired about my situation, but there wasn’t any real interest. I didn’t want to listen too much. Tottenham probably asked for a lot of money for me because they value me as one of the best.”
Spurs man not closing transfer door
The defender had a spell at Girona before leaving Spain for Manchester City in 2019. Since then, he has been away from his country and is keen on returning to La Liga in the future.
After mentioning Dani Carvajal as Real Madrid’s best right-back, journalist Manu Carreño asked what he would say if Los Blancos called him.
Responding to that, Pedro Porro said: “Obviously, I’d love to return to Spain someday. It’s my country, and I like the league.”
“Right now, it would be very unfair to talk about anything other than my club because I’m under contract, but obviously, I’d love to go back to Spain; it’s a big dream of mine.”
On whether he would suit Real Madrid or Barca better, he added: “I don’t know. I’ll let people decide. I consider myself a player who can adapt to any situation.”
Roberto De Zerbi’s side went without a win in the first six league matches and won their last two.
On Spurs’ start to this season, he said: “We started poorly. We drew several matches that we could have won by small margins. We have a lot of new players, but now we have two consecutive wins, and we want to keep the streak going.”
