Newcastle United move for more viable Brazil option – Fight with Chelsea easier than Spain

by · Sport Witness

Chelsea and Newcastle United are both back in the picture for Gabriel Mec, with fresh developments in Brazil pointing towards a likely summer sale of the Grêmio teenager.

The 17-year-old has continued to gain exposure in the first team this season, reaching 17 appearances so far. He has contributed with two assists but is still waiting for his first senior goal.

That return reflects a player still adjusting to the professional level, yet his growing involvement has kept European clubs firmly interested.

Grêmio’s internal plan has been to build his value through minutes. Now, that process is reaching a decisive stage.

New pressure building around summer sale

Recent information from Brazil indicates that Gabriel Mec is expected to be sold in the middle of the year.

According to ESPN Brazil, Grêmio are attempting to renew his contract, which runs until August 2027, but talks have not progressed as planned. That uncertainty is pushing the club towards a transfer, especially to avoid a scenario where the player gains more control over his future.

A clear valuation has now been set, with a fine tune following out lastest update. The Brazilian side want between €15m and €20m (£12.9m-£17.2m) and will not negotiate below that range.

Chelsea and Newcastle are mentioned as a part of a wider group of interested clubs. The “new Vinicius Jr.” has attracted enquiries from several European sides, also including Sevilla, Villarreal and other undisclosed suitors.

More recently, Nottingham Forest and Brentford have also made enquiries, expanding the English presence in the race. Liverpool remains part of the background.

But all this confirms a shift. Mec is is now an asset actively positioned for a summer sale. Of course, local fans are not happy about this, as they think Grêmio could sell him for “two or three times of that figure” if they kept him until 2027 at least.

Newcastle United angle grows

Newcastle United’s presence in this story is becoming more relevant.

The Premier League side have been exploring the South American market and were also linked to Eduardo Conceição from Palmeiras. However, competition for that deal has intensified significantly, with clubs like Manchester City and Barcelona involved.

That has left Newcastle slightly behind in that particular race. As a result, Gabriel Mec emerges as a more attainable and realistic target within a similar profile bracket.

At the same time, Chelsea have made enquiries for Mec as part of this evolving situation. Their interest is not new, but the timing now is different. They are looking again at a player who is closer to a move and comes with clearer financial parameters.

Context behind rising interest

Earlier in his development, Mec had already attracted concrete proposals from Europe. As we covered, those moves did not materialise, largely due to timing and player preference.

Now, the scenario is different. He turns 18 in April, removing a key barrier for a transfer. At the same time, Grêmio’s financial context and contract situation are aligning towards a sale.

The result is a more urgent and open market. Chelsea already know the player well and are back gathering information. Newcastle, meanwhile, may see Mec as a more viable route after setbacks elsewhere in South America.

With the price defined and the timeline becoming clearer, the coming months are likely to determine whether either club turns interest into a formal move.
