Newcastle United want €10m for transfer – Very fair price, but ‘virtually impossible’ to meet
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessNewcastle United goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos’ future beyond this season remains uncertain.
The Greece international arrived at St James’ Park from Nottingham Forest in July 2024 and made one appearance in his debut season.
Last August, Newcastle United sanctioned a loan move to Sevilla, without any purchase option or obligation.
The decision to move to Spain has clearly paid off. The stopper initially sat on the bench before making his debut in September and has been the La Liga side’s No.1 since then.
His league stats for Sevilla are as follows:
- Appearances: 26
- Clean sheets: 4
- Goals conceded: 44
- Goals conceded per game: 1.9
- Penalties saved: 1/10
- Saves per game: 2.9
On March 13th, the goalkeeper refused to comment on his future after this season.
Three days later, Sevilla sporting director Antonio Cordón insisted he wants to extend his stay. The official has also expressed his desire to retain him after this season.
Newcastle United take firm transfer stance
As per Antonio Cordó’sn recent comments, Sevilla only have to find an agreement with Eddie Howe’s side to extend Odysseas Vlachodimos’ stay.
Orgullo Biri now have a report on his chances of extending stay at the Andalusian club.
The 31-year-old is an undisputed starter in La Liga and his performances this season have attracted interest from other unnamed clubs.
Therefore, Newcastle United are refusing to offer a significant discount, also considering they paid €24m to sign him. The Magpies’ ‘final price’ is €10m, which is too high for the Spanish club.
This makes it ‘virtually impossible’ for Sevilla to buy him, and they have informed the same to his agent. The two parties have analysed various scenarios in which Sevilla can retain the stopper.
For now, keeping Vlachodimos’ beyond the loan deal is a ‘pipe dream’. The situation could only change if the club were to get a new investor soon.
What next for player and Magpies
As things stand, Odysseas Vlachodimos will return to the Premier League side, where he has a contract until 2028. His value, as per Transfermarkt, is €4m.
Eddie Howe now has Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale [on loan from Southampton] and Mark Gillespie as his three goalkeepers. Gillespie and Pope’s contracts expire in 2026 and 2027 respectively.
If the Magpies were to keep the Greek stopper, he’s likely to again settle for a backup role rather than be their new No.1. This could probably convince him to push for a summer transfer to enjoy regular minutes next season.
However, it’s worth noting how well he’s done in La Liga this season, and whilst it’s unlikely he’ll be the Newcastle United No.1, he appears to have the ability required for the role.
