Birmingham City: Medical as club CEO confirms transfer agreement

by · Sport Witness

On Thursday morning, Sport Witness brought the news that Go Ahead Eagles expect to complete a deal for Birmingham City’s Alfons Sampsted.

The Eredivisie club are losing Mats Deijl, who is in the process of joining Feyenoord, and Sampsted is his replacement.

Joining from FC Twente, initially on loan, in 2024, the fullback has struggled to have prominence for Birmingham City more recently. That has come since promotion to the Championship and increased demands.

Things have got a little better for the 27-year-old under Chris Davies in recent weeks. He’s appeared in four of the club’s last six league matches.

However, that hasn’t saved his Birmingham City future.

Dutch confidence of a move happening has been underlined by Go Ahead Eagles themselves. As reported by De Stentor, a newspaper local to the club, Sampsted has been expected for a medical.

Go Ahead Eagles CEO Jan Willem van Dop has told the newspaper the Birmingham City player will have a medical ‘very soon’.

Voetbal Primeur quote Van Dop as saying: “Deijl’s replacement is undergoing a medical today. So, in principle, he’s already in. We’ve reached an agreement with the club, and we’ve reached an agreement with the agent and his player.”

Over at De Telegraaf it’s stated the Championship club have come to an agreement with the Eredivisie side. No details are shared on the cost of the move, with the player’s Birmingham City contract running until 2027.

Alfons Sampsted now has to pass his medical tests, which is the only barrier left in the way.
