Adi Hütter on Oliver Glasner being right to leave Crystal Palace

by · Sport Witness

Crystal Palace had been expected by many, in Germany and Austria at least, to make a move for Adi Hütter in summer 2023. Roy Hodgson had been put in charge in March, following Patrick Vieira’s exit, and that run was expected to last until the end of the season.

Hodgson managed to do well enough to convince those in charge at Crystal Palace to keep him on. However, that didn’t last beyond the following February, when it became 200 games and out with the Eagles for Hodgson.

Oliver Glasner arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt in February 2024. He’d taken over at the Bundesliga club after Hütter had left, with the latter using an exit clause to allow him to join Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Glasner’s time with Crystal Palace has been one of the best periods in the club’s history.

The FA Cup win is of course the cherry on top. A generational triumph which will define this era of supporting Crystal Palace for many.

The manager has repeatedly spoken to the Austrian media about just how much he thinks of the club, and the supporters. But it’s been clear in interviews since the start of the summer that frustration was growing. Glasner didn’t expect a Champions League budget or support, but he did want to know he was taking Crystal Palace forward. As he explained repeatedly in Austria, stagnation was something he just didn’t want.

With the 51-year-old having now announced he’s leaving, multiple options have been linked. Unsurprisingly, Adi Hütter has been one of the names mentioned.

The 55-year-old parted ways with AS Monaco in October and is a free agent.

Hütter has been speaking to Kronen Zeitung, and whilst he wasn’t directly asked about replacing his compatriot, he was asked about Glasner’s Crystal Palace exit.

The Austrian newspaper put it to Hütter that Glasner has had a ‘thankless task’ at Crystal Palace. He didn’t want to push that point too much, but agreed the exit decision is correct.

“He won two titles there,” Hütter said. “And now his best players are being poached. He will and must take the next step. We can be proud of Austria’s coaches.”

Asked about potential getting the Austria job after the World Cup, he didn’t sound interested.

“We have a good national team coach. My goal is a top-five league.”

Unfortunately, Kronen Zeitung didn’t outright ask if he fancies replacing Glasner at Crystal palace.
