Tottenham reach agreement for signing – Fee agreed, paperwork on the way

Tottenham Hotspur interest in Santos’ Souza has been reported by the Brazilian media for weeks. The 19-year-old has been of interest to multiple European clubs, with his displays showing a level beyond his young years.

Earlier today, we covered an explanation from Brazil which explained why Souza is ready for European football. Far from him being an investment which Spurs can hope to benefit from in the medium term, there’s a Brazilian belief he’s ready now.

Tottenham have been closing in on the transfer for days. Other interested clubs have been falling away, meanwhile Spurs have made advances with Santos.

It would now appear the Premier League club have sealed a deal.

As reported by ESPN Brasil – and crucially their senior reporters André Hernan and Bruno Andrade – Tottenham have now reached an agreement for Souza.

Spurs initially offered €10m for the player, only to see that rejected by Santos. The Brazilian club are only entitled to 75% of the transfer fee. That isn’t unusual in the country, with agents and families often having a stake.

Undeterred by that rejection, Tottenham returned with around €15m. Not a huge amount by Premier League standards, albeit a 50% upgrade on the first offer.

The latest offer is enough for Santos, subsequently an agreement has been reached.

Souza has now asked to be excused from playing against Novorizontino this weekend, evidently wanting to avoid it getting in the way.

Only bureaucratic details need to be sorted out. That may be related to a visa, which would allow Souza to fly for his Tottenham medical.
