Arsenal ‘are in pole position’ to sign goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol despite Barcelona making efforts to sign him.

That’s according to Cadena SER, who report that Barcelona have asked about the goalkeeper’s release clause but could be beaten by Arsenal.

They report that Arsenal are in pole position for the goalkeeper, who was a target throughout the summer transfer window as well.

They’ve shown the most interest in him so far, despite Barcelona also being keen and making enquiries. The problem for the Catalans is that they already have Andre Ter Stegen, Wojciech Szczesny and plan to add a reserve goalkeeper as number three.

Thus, Garcia could end up slipping through their fingers as Arsenal also want him and are ‘best placed’ to secure the transfer at this moment in time.

This has also been confirmed by Santi Ovalle in El bar de Sique Rodriguez, but he also confirmed that the Barcelona have been asking about him. They, though, will only go to the market if there is an opportunity.

Arsenal already came close to his €30m release clause in the summer, offering €25m but failing to convince Espanyol of a deal.

The Spanish side could do with the money but it’s debatable whether Garcia would want to move to the Emirates as he’d be number two behind David Raya.

That’s something they’ll have to work out and for now they are in pole position despite Barcelona’s attempts behind the scenes.
