Eric Chelle Praises Super Eagles’ Fighting Spirit After 4-1 Win Over Gabon
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsSuper Eagles head coach Eric Chelle was visibly overjoyed as Nigeria booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff with a dominant 4-1 win over Gabon on Thursday.
From the sidelines, Eric Chelle watched his team demonstrate exactly what he had demanded during training: focus, unity, and relentless passion.
Sevilla striker Akor Adams opened the scoring in the 78th minute, finishing smartly into an empty net after capitalizing on a loose ball. But Gabon refused to fold, and Mario Lemina’s strike leveled the score in the 88th minute, giving the Panthers hope.
Chelle’s strategy and words resonated with his squad in the dying moments. Second half substitute Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead in the first half of extra time, finishing neatly from Wilfred Ndidi’s pass. Victor Osimhen then turned on the style, netting twice to secure a comprehensive 4-1 win.
After the match, Eric Chelle spoke with pride about his players’ commitment and attitude.
“I am very proud of these guys (players) because every time they are focused on what I asked, what I want and it show what I want. The word today was the passion, during my speech it was about passion it was the working together to have the same thing,” he said.
The win is particularly remarkable given the turmoil that preceded the clash. The Super Eagles had briefly gone on strike on Tuesday over unpaid match bonuses, returning to training only 24 hours before kickoff. Despite this, Chelle’s squad rose to the challenge, executing their game plan perfectly under pressure.
Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba also commended the team for their resilience. “Despite the problems, the boys reacted positively and did the job. What a fantastic display we saw in the extra-time. I’m sure this momentum these boys will take to the next game. A great, great result. Our boys will be so pleased with the extra time of this game. So congratulations to the boys,” Ikpeba said on SuperSport.
Chelle now has his sights set on Sunday’s final against the Leopards of DR Congo, with a ticket to represent Africa at the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 on the line.
