Thierry Henry Backs Arsenal’s Style As Arteta Explains Saka Substitution In Leverkusen Draw

Arsenal F.C. legend Thierry Henry has defended the team’s style of play under manager Mikel Arteta amid criticism that the Premier League leaders are “boring”.

Despite sitting seven points clear of Manchester City F.C. at the top of the table, Arsenal have faced complaints from some quarters about their pragmatic approach to games.

Henry, speaking on CBS Sports, insisted results matter more than aesthetics and said the current side knows how to control matches and grind out results when required.

“You don’t have to like the way Arsenal F.C. play, but you will respect it,” he said.

“Yes, we weren’t great against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, but even on an off night we still found a way to get a draw. That’s what top teams do.”

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday at the BayArena.

Arteta later explained his decision to substitute Bukayo Saka around the hour mark, bringing on Noni Madueke to provide a different threat on the right flank.

The change proved decisive late in the match. Madueke was fouled in the penalty area in the closing stages, allowing Kai Havertz to convert from the spot in the 89th minute and secure the draw for the visitors.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said the tactical switch was deliberate.

“I thought that we needed something else,” he said.

“Noni has been contributing and being a real threat and I decided to make the change.”

The Spanish coach also praised Madueke’s direct style of play, saying it often unsettles defenders.

“It’s not surprising,” he said.

“That’s his greatest strength. He consistently attempts bold dribbles and poses a threat to opponents.”
