Club World Cup: Chelsea Knockout Palmeiras, To Face Thiago Silva’s Fluminense
by Ernest Victor · Naija NewsChelsea booked their place in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Palmeiras earlier today, July 5.
Brazilian teenager and Chelsea-bound Estevao Willian was the centre of attraction at the Lincoln Financial Field with a stunning equaliser just eight minutes into the second half.
The 18-year-old, who recently sealed a £52 million move to Chelsea, celebrated his goal with caution, knowing that it might be the last time he scores against the Blues.
Chelsea had taken the lead early on through Cole Palmer, who calmly slotted home in the 16th minute after a smooth move.
The Blues controlled much of the first half, but Palmeiras remained dangerous on the counter and got their reward when Estevao found the net from a tight angle in the 53rd minute.
It was a moment of brilliance, but Chelsea responded timely. Malo Gusto’s driven cross deflected off Palmeiras defender Giay Agustin and entered his own net, sealing the victory for the Premier League side.
While Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will be pleased with the result, he faces a few headaches going into the semi-final. Captain Reece James was forced off the starting lineup after picking up an injury during warm-ups, and midfielder Romeo Lavia was again absent due to a knock.
There was also disappointment for young striker Liam Delap, who will miss the semi-final after receiving a second yellow card in the tournament just before halftime. His unnecessary challenge on Richard Rios was enough for the referee to show him the card, meaning Delap is suspended for Chelsea’s next match.
Chelsea now turn their attention to Tuesday’s semi-final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where they will face Brazilian giants Fluminense, the club of Chelsea legend Thiago Silva.
