Nigeria’s impressive 4-1 win over Gabon in the 2026 CAF World Cup playoff semifinal has drawn applause from several prominent Nigerians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Naija News reports that the match, played at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on Thursday, saw the Super Eagles take control with goals from Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and two from Victor Osimhen. The result booked Nigeria a place in Sunday’s final, where they will face the Democratic Republic of Congo for a ticket to the intercontinental playoffs.

Shortly after the final whistle, Atiku shared his excitement on 𝕏. “Proud of the @NGSuperEagles for giving Nigeria a fighting chance in the 2026 World Cup Africa playoff final. -AA,” he posted.

Obi also took to 𝕏 to explain that despite moving between Lagos, Abuja and Anambra for engagements, he made sure to catch the match.

“My excitement after the match for the sweet victory made me forget my immediate tweet, as I always do after every one of their matches,” he wrote. “I sincerely congratulate our dear Super Eagles on their outstanding and well-deserved victory today.”

Obi went on to stress the importance of investing in Nigerian talent. He noted that the team’s performance shows that “when we invest in talents and support our institutions, Nigeria can compete and win on any global stage.” He closed with, “Well done, Eagles. Keep soaring.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, also praised the team for their determination. “Congratulations to our national team @NGSuperEagles on their stunning 4-1 comeback victory over Gabon to secure a place in the final playoff. Well done to the team for staying disciplined and finishing strong,” he said.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau added his voice to the celebrations, saying the team showed the grit needed for success. “We are happy with the result. The players rose stoutly to the occasion and made Nigeria proud with a solid performance. No doubt, they have that grit, guts and winning mentality to conquer whoever turns out to be the opposition in Sunday’s Final,” he told thenff.com.

The winner of Sunday’s clash will advance to the six-nation FIFA intercontinental playoffs in March.
