David Beckham has been formally knighted by King Charles III, marking a new milestone in the former England captain’s remarkable journey from football star to national icon.

David Beckham, 50, received the honour on Tuesday during a ceremony at Windsor Castle, surrounded by his wife Victoria and his parents, Sandra and David.

Beckham’s name appeared on the King’s Birthday Honours list earlier this year, recognising his lasting contributions to football and his service to British society.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Beckham said afterwards. “People know how patriotic I am, I love my country. I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I’m lucky enough to have travelled around the world and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. It makes me proud.”

Victoria, who was awarded an OBE in 2017 for her work in fashion, designed the outfit her husband wore for the occasion. Beckham later revealed that King Charles complimented his suit.

“[King Charles] was quite impressed with my suit,” Beckham said with a smile. “He’s the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look. It was something that my wife made me. I looked at old pictures of him when he was quite young in morning suits, and I was like, ‘OK, that’s what I want to wear’, so I gave it to my wife, and she did it.”

Beckham’s career remains one of the most celebrated in English football. He earned 115 international caps, captaining England for six years between 2000 and 2006. He is a product of Manchester United’s academy. The midfield maestro became a household name during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League.

After leaving Old Trafford in 2003, Beckham joined Real Madrid in a £25 million transfer and spent four seasons in Spain. He later played for LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, with loan spells at AC Milan, before ending his playing days at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

But Beckham’s influence stretches far beyond the pitch. A proud Londoner, he played a key role in helping London win the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. He has also worked closely with UNICEF since 2005 and launched the 7 Fund in 2015 to support vulnerable children worldwide.

In 2024, he became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, supporting initiatives aimed at educating young people and promoting environmental awareness.

Beckham’s relationship with the royal family has always been close. He received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 and was among the thousands who queued for over 12 hours to pay their respects when she lay in state in 2022.

Now officially “Sir David Beckham,” the former midfielder continues to shape football’s future as co-owner of Inter Miami in the United States and Salford City in England’s League Two, alongside former teammates Gary Neville and others.
