Mohamed Salah new contract hint after inspiring Liverpool to Champions League win

by · Irish Mirror

Mohamed Salah has suggested he will sign a new Liverpool contract after inspiring the Reds to a 2-1 Champions League win over 10-man Lille on Tuesday night.

The Egyptian opened the scoring against the French side as he netted his 50th European goal for the Merseyside club. But his contract will expire at the end of the season, with the club so far dropping no hints over his future.

However, when asked after the victory if he would score another 50 goals in Europe for Liverpool, the forward told Amazon Prime: "I'm not sure about that, but I'll give it my best."

It is the clearest hint yet that Salah will be remaining at Anfield, with the attacker having first arrived in the summer of 2017. He scored another crucial goal to help the Reds beat Lille and book their place in the last 16 of this year's Champions League.

Salah opened the scoring 34 minutes into what had been a largely banal affair, slotting home from Curtis Jones' excellent through ball. Liverpool did suffer a scare when Jonathan David equalised for the visitors, who had gone down to 10 men just three minutes before, reports The Mirror.

But Harvey Elliott eased their frustrations when his shot from distance took a deflection and flew in. Despite seeing his side nearly throw away a win, Salah was largely happy witth their performance.

"Something I'm very happy and proud of, especially as we won the game because that's the important thing," he said of reaching the 50-goal landmark. "I wasn't focused about it before the game to be fair.

"They had a really good gameplan and have been unbeaten for 21 games so quite a tough team. We give them credit but I'm glad we managed to win the win.

"We recovered the ball from them, Curtis passed the pass very well and I managed to score. They went for the counter attack and managed to score. Little bit disappointed about it because the clean sheet is very important.

"I think the manager will speak about it so we'll see. When you want to win a big tournament you need a big squad. We have good talent, players working very hard, the manager also has a good idea so we just have to give it a try and we'll see."

While their place in the last 16 has been assured, Liverpool will still need to claim a point against PSV Eindhoven in their final game to confirm a top spot finish in the league phase.
