Bohemians lead tributes to their 'greatest-ever manager' Billy Young

Bohemians have paid an emotional tribute to their ‘longest-serving and greatest-ever’ manager Billy Young, who has died aged 87.

Young, who passed away on Thursday, spent over three decades with the Gypsies as a player and manager.

He first managed Athlone Town and Shamrock Rovers but became Bohs boss for 16 years between 1973 and 1989, And he was successful during that time, winning two league titles, an FAI Cup and two League Cups.

Young was also at the helm when Bohemians famously beat Glasgow Rangers 3-2 in Europe in 1984.

A Bohs statement read: “It is with great sadness that Bohemian FC confirms that Billy Young, our longest-serving and greatest-ever manager, passed away yesterday at the age of 87.

“As both a player and manager, Billy’s service to Bohemians spanned three decades, representing our club with love, passion and determination.”

The club statement continued: “In his later years, he remained an avid follower of his club, offering guidance and inspiration to many of his successors.

“Along with members of his family, who are all in our thoughts today, he remained a regular attendee at Dalymount up to and including this season.

“To all of the Young family, Billy’s many friends, former team-mates and protégés, everyone at Bohemian FC extends our deepest sympathies and condolences on the passing of the best of Bohemians.

“RIP Billy.”
