Ireland's Katie McCabe secures Champions League final date with Barcelona

by · Irish Mirror

Ireland star Katie McCabe has a Champions League final date to look forward to after a stunning Arsenal comeback in the semi-final.

The Gunners were trailing Lyon 2-1 after a first-leg defeat at home but came roaring back in France last night. Arsenal won 4-1 to secure a Champions League final date against Barcelona after a 5-3 aggregate win.

Barcelona beat Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate to secure their spot in the final against Arsenal in Lisbon on May 24.

McCabe was central to Arsenal’s win and was only substituted in injury-time, once the victory was wrapped up.

Before the Lyon clash, McCabe was adamant that Arsenal could rescue their semi-final tie from 2-1 down after the first-leg.

McCabe had said: “You have to have it all – the grit, the perseverance, the courage to step up in these games,” she said.

“We were frustrated at times, especially in the first leg, by the fine margins and not getting over the line as such.

“But we have been hard at it, in terms of looking at how we can do better in those moments, keep improving, keep creating those opportunities.”

After last night’s win, Arsenal captain Kim Little told TNT Sports: “It means a lot, which I think you can tell by the emotion.

“This is an incredible football club and we’ve had numerous games in the Champions League and not quite made it to the final since we won it in 2007, so it’s just really special to get there.

“Just excited and looking forward to that – we all can’t wait to represent this great club in the final.”
