Who are Willie Mullins' Grand National runners?
by Darragh Culhane · Irish MirrorWillie Mullins is looking for his third Grand National winner this Saturday as he lands in Aintree with high hopes.
The renowned trainer has twice seen his horses cross the Aintree finish line first. In 2005 Hedgehunter raced to victory while last year saw I Am Maximus win the showpiece race.
The most decorated trainer in Cheltenham history, Mullins has admitted there is a lot more luck needed to win at Aintree.
But he will have six runners on Saturday and they are as followed.
- I Am Maximus Paul Townend
- Nick Rockett Patrick Mullins
- Grangeclare West Brian Hayes
- Appreciate It Sean O'Keefe
- Minella Cocooner Jonathan Burke
- Meetingofthewaters Danny Mullins
It has been a fast start to the festival with Mullins winning all four of the Grade One races on Thursday but has admitted it's a bigger task ahead on Saturday.
"Most trainers don’t – if they win one Grand National, they are very lucky. So, it was a bit surreal to see him (I Am Maximus) do what he did last year in the manner he did," Mullins said of the race in the aftermath of Cheltenham.
“You need so much luck to win a National. Everything has to go right all year and then everything has to go right in the race.
“I appreciate it. A plan came together, it doesn’t always work. To win the Grand National is every kid’s dream. For most of us, it is a first instance of watching a race on TV, seeing the romance of it and the stories behind the race.
“When I started off racing, if someone said to me, ‘which race do you want to win?’ it would be the Grand National. It has been a dream come true twice.”
