Lions injury update issued by Andy Farrell as star heads for X-ray

by · Irish Mirror

British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has provided an update on Elliot Daly after the England ace was forced off due to injury during Wednesday's victory over Queensland Reds.

Farrell's team scored eight tries as they swept aside the Super Rugby side with a commanding second-half performance in Brisbane. Tommy Freeman bagged two tries, while Andrew Porter, Duhan van der Merwe, Maro Itoje, Jac Morgan, Huw Jones, and Garry Ringrose all added to the tally.

The resounding win signalled a promising improvement for the Lions following their victory over Western Force and loss to Argentina, with Welsh star Morgan being named player of the match.

However, the triumph was overshadowed by worrying scenes later in the game when Daly was seen clutching his arm in pain after failing to properly execute a tackle.

The England international - who was a last-minute addition to the starting line-up after Hugo Keenan withdrew due to illness - received medical attention after the heavy collision just past the hour mark, reports Wales Online.

His discomfort was evident as he was seen grimacing in pain, but he quickly got back on his feet, seemingly resolved to finish the rest of the match. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack for the exclusive five-week tour diary from Japan and Australia.

However, just five minutes later, a visibly upset Daly left the field, his reaction sparking concern among Lions fans.

After the match, Farrell spoke to Sky Sports and shared that the 32 year old was off for an X-ray to assess his injury.

"He's pretty sore in there," the head coach remarked. "We'll get him an X-ray.

"It looks like he's taken a knock to his forearm there, so fingers crossed for him."

Daly's future on this year's Lions tour now hangs in the balance, as a serious injury could force him to follow Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams in flying home from Australia.

If Keenan doesn't recover from his illness, it seems likely that Scotland's Blair Kinghorn will don the No. 15 shirt for the upcoming match against the Waratahs on Saturday.

Neither Kinghorn nor Keenan have had a run-out for the Lions this summer, despite being tipped as top choices for the full-back position in Australia.

When asked about his preparations for the first Test against Australia, Farrell commented: "Of course you have thoughts, but again you need to be open-minded enough.

"I think it's just Hugo and Blair that haven't played now. I think some lads today were desperate for another crack to get out there again.

"A lot of lads have put their hands up really well and may the competition continue."
