Rory McIlroy and Andy Murray shared an emotional embrace as the former tennis star consoled his pal on a 'tough year'.

It was another rollercoaster year for McIlroy, winning three times but suffering heartbreak at the US Open, Olympic Games, and Irish Open.

Off the course, it was an eventful one for the golfing star after announcing he split from his wife Erica before a U-turn on the decision.

McIlroy also looked set to rejoin the PGA Tour Board after stepping down from the role but his return was shot down by some of his peers and has been left on the outside looking in.

Tennis legend Murray also went through his own emotional 2024 as he retired after an illustrious career.

The Scot has been plagued by injury in recent years and announced this would be his final year playing professionally. The Dunblane native bowed out of the Australian and French Open in the first round and was absent for both the Wimbledon singles and US Open singles.

He competed in the doubles at Wimbledon with his brother Jamie before waving goodbye to the historic venue. Murray's career came to a close at the 2024 Olympic Games after suffering defeat alongside Dan Evans.

Murray is in Wentworth competing at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am and was greeted by McIlroy at the driving range.

Turning to see his old friend, Murray said to McIlroy: "I've been playing a lot of golf the last few weeks. Great job this year. It's been tough but you've done super well."

McIlroy will play alongside Justin Rose and Ryan Fox for the opening two rounds.
