Rory McIlroy held off the challenge of his compatriot and good friend Shane Lowry to win the the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am for the first time.

McIlroy shot a final round of 66 to finish on 21-under-par and two shots clear of his Ireland teammate Lowry.

It is McIlroy's 27th victory on the PGA Tour on his first start on the circuit this year and sees him climb to third place in the FedEx Cup rankings.

The 35-year-old picked up first shot on the day on the par five second hole after getting up and down from left of the green.

A fabulous long iron from a fairway bunker on the par five sixth hole looked to have set up another birdie but a three putt saw him settle for a par.

McIlroy responded quickly with a birdie on the seventh hole only to drop a shot on the eighth after an errant second shot.

Another very good fairway bunker shot set up another birdie on the tenth hole before he picked up a further shot on the par three 12th hole.

By now McIlroy had a two-shot lead over a chasing pack that included Lowry, Tom Kim and Lucas Glover.

And the Holywood golfer began to put the hammer down when eagling the par five 14th hole to give him a three-shot lead over Lowry, who rallied on the back nine after a poor one-over front nine.

Another fine approach shot on the 15th set up a short birdie putt for McIlroy as he went four clear of Lowry and Sepp Straka.

Lowry hit back with a birdie on the 16th hole to cut the gap to three shots and had a good chance to make it two on the 17th hole only to miss a good chance for birdie.

McIlroy could afford to take an iron off the last tee and make a stress-free par to seal the win.

The victory saw McIlroy lift the trophy and pocket the $3,600,000 (€3,511,116) winners cheque.

Lowry made a birdie on the last to take second place on his own and bag $2,160,000 (€2,104,898)
