Katie McCabe's Arsenal lose on pitch labelled 'a disgrace' by Gunners icon
by Oisin Doherty · Irish MirrorIan Wright has labelled the quality of the pitch that Arsenal played on against Real Madrid on Tuesday night a 'disgrace' as the Gunners lost 2-0 in their Women's Champions Leg Quarter-final first leg.
The game, which was played at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium, was marred by a pitch that struggled to hold up to the conditions as heavy rain fell in Madrid.
A number of players suffered injuries during the game, with Real Madrid midfielder Melanie Leupolz appearing to seriously injure her knee before limping off in tears.
Taking to Instagram live during the game, Gunners legend Wright tore into the quality of the turf, saying: "This is a ******* disgrace the pitches these girls have to play on."
In a statement issued to Sky Sports, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) echoed complaints of players and pundits: "Pitches like this don't just impact the quality of the game, they put player safety at risk.
"On multiple occasions over the past few days, in important ties, our members have been asked to play in sub-standard conditions. World-class players deserve world-class standards, and they are right to expect better."
