James McClean has been involved in a car crash his way to training in Wales.

The former Republic of Ireland star was involved in the incident on the morning of Wednesday, January 22, a day before his club Wrexham take on Birmingham in a top of the table clash.

The weather in the Wrexham area one was extremely foggy on Wednesday morning, with his club confirming that a first team player was involved in a single car accident.

They said in a statement: "Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training.

"It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene.

"The player reported to the club this morning and will undergo further medical checks as a precaution."

Emergency services were called to the incident involving the Wrexham captain, who played in the Premier League with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, and in the Championship for Wigan Athletic and Stoke City.

Just days ago he labelled Shrewsbury a 'cesspit full of inbreds' in a furious rant on Instagram after Wrexham's 2-1 defeat at The Croud Meadow.

McClean and his team-mates were subjected to jeers during the heated clash and he stoked the flames post-match by trying to engage with some of the home crowd before stewards intervened.

He also received a yellow card late in the game for protesting a decision. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson downplayed the incident in his comments to Sky Sports, stating: "He's fine.

"James is used to it wherever he goes. Fans get on his back home and away and sometimes it can be tough and spill over but he is used to it."

However, on Saturday morning, McClean hit back via Instagram, potentially inviting disciplinary measures.
