India will face the heat of battling a series decider yet again as they take on the dogged New Zealand unit on a belter of a pitch at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore today. It is fair to say that despite the 1-1 scoreline of the series, it is the second-string BlackCaps outfit that has stood a rung above the Indians who have blown hot and cold. India’s top-order has gotten starts but failed to seize momentum and convert them into big scores.

There has been sudden concerns shot up over Rohit Sharma’s form too, with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate remarking that the former India captain has been short on game time leading up to the series. Scores north of 300 could well be on the cards this afternoon and the bowlers’ adaptability will be key to settle the series as India stare at a rare home defeat.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: A maiden for Arshdeep

Well this is a very good start for India but they would be cautious because the man who just absorbed all those deliveries in that over from Arshdeep was Daryl Mitchell. He has scored 216 runs thus far in the two innings he has played in this series and has expertly switched gears in both those knocks.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: OUT! Rana gets Conway first ball!

Rana has dismissed Conway in all three matches of this series now. Pitched it on a length and it looked like it would be angling in, but it holds its line. Conway pushes at it away from his body, outside edge and Rohit takes the catch at first slip.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: GONE! Arshdeep strikes first over!

It's a golden duck for Henry Nicholls! What an eventful first over this is turning out to be. Arshdeep gives Conway some width first ball, the latter leaves it. The second is wide as well and Conway pounces on it, cuts it away past backward point and the lightening fast outfield does the rest. Conway then cuts the third ball towards backward point where Jadeja drops an extremely difficult chance. The batters run a single there. Arshdeep gets a little closer to the stumps to Nicholls, the batter seems to be in two minds about whether to leave or play that. He is late to withdraw his bat, balls takes the inside edge and crashes on to the stumps.

Nicholls b Arshdeep Singh 0 (1)

New Zealand 5/1

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: What the captains said

Shubman Gill: We're gonna bowl first. (On playing the series decider) That's what we spoke about, great challenge for us, New Zealand putting us under a bit of pressure, these are the moments that all the players wait for. (On this being a high-scoring ground) That is one of the factors why we decided to bowl first. I don't think there'll be much dew here, but looks like a pretty good surface and always good to have a score on the board and then try to chase it down. (Areas to improve) In the middle overs, we need to vary our lengths a little bit more and if we don't take wickets in the middle overs, it becomes very difficult to stop any target. So that will be one of the areas where we would be looking to improve. We've got one change, Arshdeep comes back in place of Prasidh.

Michael Bracewell: We would have bowled first, but I think it looks like a good surface and I guess we're going to quickly shift to the mindset of batting first. That's right, it's a big exciting opportunity for us to win a series over here in one-day format. I think they've shown good temperament. They're getting used to international cricket and have made a good fist of it so far (on the new faces). With the series on the line you want to be able to do that stuff under pressure. So I'm looking forward to seeing how they go again tonight. No changes from the last game.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: Pitch report

It's not too big a ground, the Holkar Stadium. 62m on the right, 63m in the left and 71m down the ground. There is grass but it is a rock hard surface beneath that. Which means we could have a belter here. THis is the ground where Virender Sehwag had scored 219 14 years ago.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: Big cheers as Kohli walks out for throw ins

About 10 minutes to go for the toss but the crowd had started filling in about an hour before the start of the match itself. There were huge cheers when Virat Kohli walked out for his throw-ins and we can see both sets of players going through their drills.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: New Zealand in India over the years in ODIs

New Zealand's first ever ODI game in India was part of the 1987 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the country with Pakistan. Which is the reason why it is important to specify that their first ever ODI match in India was in India's Hyderabad, as Pakistan's Hyderabad was also a host venue for the tournament. It was against Zimbabwe and New Zealand won that match by three runs. They have visited India for ODI cricket 16 times in total, never have they won the series or tournament that they were playing for.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: Ravindra Jadeja's decade without a fifty

Ravindra Jadeja's stature as a batsman has improved leaps and bound in the last decade but this hasn't really translated into runs in ODIs. Jadeja has scored 2893 runs in 141 innings at an average of 32.50 with 13 half-centuries and no centuries. The last time he scored more than 50 in a match was on December 2020 in Canberra against Australia when he made an unbeaten 66. However, the last-time he made a 50-plus score in an ODI played in India was all the way back on January 19, 2013 when he scored an unbeaten 61 against England in Kochi.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score:Will New Zealand do another first on India?

Last year, New Zealand pulled off the shock of all shocks by whitewashing India in a three-match Test series. Among all the teams that have come to India and struggled in Test matches, New Zealand have historically looked the least likely to win even a single match, let alone a series. And yet here they were, dominating India in their own backyard. Now, they have a chance to do something similar - in all the years that New Zealand have played ODI cricket in India, they have never won any series or tournament hosted or co-hosted by the country.

IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: Why this NZ team deserves credit for making it 1-1

Setting aside any patronizing undertones, New Zealand deserves real credit for their competitive edge. In Rajkot, 31-year-old debutant Jayden Lennox proved vital; his disciplined left-arm spin during the middle overs effectively kept India’s total under 300. That same match saw 24-year-old all-rounder Kristian Clarke dismantle India’s top order, claiming the massive wickets of Rohit, Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer in a match-defining spell. This followed a strong performance in Vadodara by 23-year-old Zak Foulkes, who, in only his third ODI, delivered a restrictive opening spell that set the stage for India’s difficult and ultimately unsuccessful chase. IND vs NZ 3rd ODI LIVE Score: Welcome

It's a belter of a pitch. Small boundaries. An opposition punching above their weight. India's ODI stables haven't been breached by any team, save Australia, at home since 2016. As unlikely as it seemed that they would topple a dominant Asian bulwark at home 3-0 in Tests in late 2024, New Zealand carry the same under-rated threat into this game in Indore, even without a bunch of their main cast players in the squad.

In the backdrop of tragedy, cricket arrives in Indore

On Friday, the roads leading to Holkar Stadium — Indore’s modest yet lively international cricket venue — hinted that, if only momentarily, the city’s prevailing gloom might lift. The Indian men’s cricket team is set to arrive ahead of Sunday’s third ODI against New Zealand, even as the city grapples with a devastating tragedy. At least 15 people have died after consuming contaminated water, the state government informed the high court on Tuesday. For a city that takes immense pride in its reputation as the cleanest in the country — a claim loudly proclaimed on billboards across town and largely reflected in its streets — the failure to supply safe drinking water has delivered a sharp blow to its collective conscience. READ MORE
