India Vs West Indies, 3rd T20I: Arshdeep Singh’s 3/44 helped India beat West Indies by 14 runs. Earlier, Abhishek Sharma’s 30-ball 69 helped India to get 223 from 20 overs after West Indies skipper Shai Hope won the toss and opted to bowl first against Shreyas Iyer’s India in the third of the five-match T20I series at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. The series is level at 1-1 after West Indies pulled off an unlikely win in Ranchi by chasing a massive score.

While India’s batting continues to impress, their bowling is starting to become a concern. During the ODI series, Shubman Gill faced a similar issue, and in the T20I series, Iyer, too, is struggling to restrict the opposition, albeit with a different bowling attack.

West Indies, on the other hand, have been mercurial in this series. Similar to India, their batting has been quite powerful, but their bowling performances have not delivered once this series, unlike India’s, who have had their moments.

[On 223 posted by India] I think the score is pretty much good, because the way we started and ended it, obviously, 15-20 runs difference, but I still feel 220 is a really good score, especially on this pitch. [What bowling lengths and lines could be challenging on this surface?] Anything a bit 5 to 6 meters would be great, because it's not easy to play straight shots. So you have to wait for the ball to hit it, and that was the plan when we were batting. We had to just wait for the ball, and we spoke to the bowlers as well. The lengths and the lines, I think, which are a bit difficult to hit here. I know it's a small boundary, but still it wouldn't be too easy to hit sixes and fours here. It's the center pitch being used, and watch the boundary dimensions. Bowlers, look away, cover your eyes, cover your ears, because down the ground it's 72, square equidistance only 63, and behind the stumps 55 meters. So batters will enjoy this opportunity. Now I took a trip down memory lane and looked at previous T20 international matches at this venue. Only four, and guess what? The average first-innings score, 200. You say 200? You would expect a little more to come out of this surface with the dimensions in play. The pitch looks very, very good, very native to these conditions, and it looks very, very hard because when you have a look right here, that sound, that is a very, very good sound for batters indeed. Nicely rolled through the surface. There is a patch of grass, but that's more for binding this particular surface. Had a chat with the curator. He says you would expect some dew, even though they've sprayed some agent around the ground. There was dew day before yesterday, not too much yesterday, but you'd expect, of course, like the trend of this series, where all teams that have chased - the T20s and ODIs - all teams that have chased have won. [On the record chase in Ranchi] Yeah, obviously, coming (off) that historic run, 250, the guys are very confident in the camp, but we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We still have to trust the process and play each game on its merit. [How tough have these wickets been for bowlers?] Yeah, on these wickets the margin for error as a bowler is very slim. You have to be spot on with your lines and lengths, and it's all about execution. And that's been the main word for us as bowlers, even as batters on this tour. It's all about execution. [How do you prepare to execute your bowling plans in these conditions?] Well, mainly I just try to stick to my strengths, which is trying to hit the top of the stumps on a hard length, and then if that's not working, if the batsman then tries to measure me, then it's time to go to my yorkers. That's a good strength of mine, and I just try to keep the ball away from the batsmen, and then I think it's about being smart and studying each and every player and knowing where they want to hit the ball mostly, and trying to get away from that.

[Has anything been told to the pace bowling group?] Yeah, it is tough. It's tough - spinners and pacers. It's tough, and especially when the dew comes in. That makes it even harder because then the variation of the slow balls, it doesn't really have that big effect that it would usually have on a dry surface. So as I said, it's just about execution and sticking to the plan that you have. Whatever plan you have, just try to execute it to the best of your ability. Have a few where you can have more than one option to kind of keep the batsman guessing where you're going to go. Because sometimes if you're too predictable to certain batsmen, they set themselves up, and with these small grounds and the good batsmen they have, the ball is flying easily. Yes, you need to be confident in what you're doing, and just, as I say, just at the top of your mark, think about what you want to do and back that execution.
