This, though, will be a different challenge from what they have played the Kiwis against previously. The dimensions will be smaller than the Indian grounds, but the bounce and seam movement will be significant. The Indian team, who have been travelling a lot lately, will play today just five days after the game against West Indies in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will want to taste blood by taking revenge for the Indian domination on their home ground. Their pace attack will suit these conditions, and the dimensions and shapes of the boundaries will give them a huge advantage.

India Vs New Zealand Live: What did Sanju Samson say after game

[On his performance and India's opening win in the series] It feels really good. I think, yes, we are just in the moment where the match has been won. Whatever contribution you make, I think it feels good to end up on the winning side. So it's a really great contribution from all of us in the team. So it was completely a team game today. So really happy that we started off nicely for the series. [On his opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma and their approach at the top of the order] We do have a lot of conversations happening in the middle, but nothing makes sense actually. We just watch the ball and hit hard. It has been working very well for us and I like batting with him at the top. [On the pitch and the movement of the ball] The ball was swinging around a lot, I think in the second half, a bit too much actually. But off the surface it was coming on very nicely. So I think me and Abhi just felt like keeping the shape and having a very positive intent in the powerplay. Once we got off to a flying start, we felt the match could be finished in the first half as well. Six overs, 90-odd runs - that was a great start today. So I think we just wanted to go all out. [On whether keeping wickets helps him assess the pitch and prepare for batting] Absolutely, you definitely think about your batting while you are keeping wickets. But I think today I summed up my way to play the game while keeping, but when I came to bat, it was completely different. In the first half, the ball was stopping a bit from the length area, but in the second half I think the ball was coming on very nicely with heavy dew in the outfield. So I really enjoyed the batting.

India Vs New Zealand Live: What did Shreyas Iyer say after the game

[On India's win and whether the team has now overcome the jet lag] Fantastic. Probably we've got to forget about the jet lag now. [On the pitch conditions, India's bowling performance, and how the surface changed during New Zealand's innings] So when we started bowling, I thought it was playing a bit slow. The ball was holding a bit, and we bowled a little ahead compared to the hard lengths we should have been hitting. But as soon as the game progressed, we saw the dew coming in, and the wicket was skidding flatter as the ball was getting through and coming onto the bat pretty well, and that's how they got the momentum and they reached to 220. Kudos to them for the efforts, but obviously we needed that kind of start, especially when you're chasing 220, getting to 80-85 in six overs, that's a tremendous start. [On whether he gives Abhishek and Samson any instructions at the top of the order] Yeah, they're absolutely experienced enough. You don't have to tell them how to go about their business. They know exactly what they're doing, and once they get going, it's just about the momentum they carry forward, and today was just an example of that. So obviously it doesn't happen every time, but once they click, you see that they set a game for us, and the rest of us, we just come and steady the ship and see to it that we finish off the game. [On Naman Dhir's performance and the importance of having a specialist batter who can also bowl at number seven] Yes, absolutely. He gives us a lot of options, especially for lefty batsmen, or even the right-handers batting, especially on this ground, coming in and bowling those two-three crucial overs actually can change the momentum. And I personally feel that the calm and composed nature that he showed today, it was simply magnificent to see him bat.

India Vs New Zealand Live: What did Mitchell Santnar say after the game

[How's the neck/head?] A bit of a whiplash there, but yeah, it's okay. [On the batting performance] I think the way the guys went out about it at the top was good. Obviously there was probably a little bit in it at the start and they adapted and adjusted, and then obviously the way GP kind of consolidated in the middle there, he was outstanding. And Bev, some clean striking as well. So we were reasonably happy with the score at halfway. [On the bowling] They put us under pressure. We knew they were going to do that, and yeah, another big powerplay from them. We weren't probably at our best. We can sharpen up a few things, but I think we know what the ball does, so you can slow them down. I think in the middle we did well to kind of squeeze them and then again it was a tight game. So I think both teams could probably look at a few things here and there, I think could have gone either way. [On the improvements for the next game] I think the extras at the start maybe and obviously I think in the field we were pretty good. It's not an easy ground to catch here. A couple more chances, closing overs at times, but, I think the powerplay is always going to be a challenge. I guess we have to find a way of trying to slow them down, but that might be an 80-run powerplay, not a 100.

India Vs New Zealand Live: IND beat NZ by 4 wickets and take 1-0 lead in Christchurch

Well, they got there in the end. It is hard to assess what to make of this chase yet; from the Indian point of view, there were shades of error they made in Hyderabad against the West Indies, but it does seem like they got over the line because the target was not that big. Sanju Samson again was the top batter for India, and he would want to convert that innings into 80 or 90 so that chases like these can be a lot easier. From a New Zealand perspective, they did not start well at all, but as the innings went on, Santner and Bracewell came into the game, but it just was not enough as India had enough power in the batting in the end.

Oct 22, 2026 04:36 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 222/6 (19.1 overs) vs NZ

Well, Naman Dhir has played a blinder of an innings here in the end. This is the role they want him to play coming down the track when the opportunity opens up. They need eight runs from the final over, and India should get there. It has been a pretty mixed bowling performance by New Zealand in the end, regardless of the result.

Oct 22, 2026 04:32 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 211/6 (18.3 overs) vs NZ

India has lost a wicket here, Shreyas Iyer. Well, there was always something like this around the corner, given how the game was panning out, and Milne finally got the breakthrough. Nitish Kumar Reddy has walked into the middle at number eight, and this is the game the combination India has picked has to work.

Oct 22, 2026 04:21 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 197/5 (17 overs) vs NZ

This should be doable for India from here on; it is not a rate which these players are accustomed to getting in this format, but there just seems to be a tense atmosphere around. Yes, it is all well and good to play cameos and hope you get over the line, but when batting second in chases, it is always important to have one of the top three hold an end up.

Oct 22, 2026 04:12 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 173/5 (15.1 overs) vs NZ

Axar Patel has fallen here just when the partnership was blossoming. New Zealand have found a way to pick a wicket. It was a slower one from Ferguson, which Axar got himself into a real awkward position and he played it to the short mid-wicket fielder, which is a very shrewd field placement at this stage of the game in this format.

Oct 22, 2026 04:01 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 154/4 (13.2 overs) vs NZ

Axar Patel is the new batter who has walked into the middle for India. He is pretty good in situations like this; he tends to build good partnerships and play what the situation demands, and that is what he is trying to do in the middle. He is going after the bowling, which has allowed Shreyas Iyer to get into the game a bit.

Oct 22, 2026 03:52 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 132/4 (11.4 overs) vs NZ

Well, Ishan Kishan has fallen here; his stay has been quite short in the middle. He tried to hit Santner out of the park but was caught on the boundary. It is something that they need to reconsider: what is the situation of the game, and is a high-risk shot worth it at that point in the game? Clearly, a boundary and a partnership would have taken India closer to the target than that wicket.

Oct 22, 2026 03:42 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 117/3 (9.3 overs) vs NZ

Sanju Samson is the batter that has fallen it was wide delivery from Mitchell Santner seemed like it was a little slower and it was chopped onto stumps by the batter. As we update, Tilak Varma has fallen here. It was a delivery which he dragged from the off-side to leg-side and could not get any timing on it, and the ball carried to a fielder on the boundary.

Oct 22, 2026 03:32 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 109/1 (7.2 overs) vs NZ

Abhishek Sharma is the batter to fall against Bracewell. The batter gave himself room and tried to hit it over extra cover and got the outside edge to the short-third man fielder it was a very smart delivery from Bracewell instead of following the batter he has taken the ball away from him which induced the toe-end and carrying to the fielder.

Oct 22, 2026 03:22 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 88/0 (5.3 overs) vs NZ

One of the errors New Zealand have made here is that they have come up with the plan of hitting the pitch hard and waiting for the errors from the Indian batters, which did not happen as both Samson and Abhishek were up to the task and were getting on top of the bounce and hitting the ball all around the park nicely.

Oct 22, 2026 03:12 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 62/0 (3.5 overs) vs NZ

New Zealand are all over the shop here; there just seems to be a dent in their confidence when playing against India time and again in this format of the game. Whenever they are playing them, they are not doing the basics well. The tactics from skipper Santner have been quite off, and again today, it is just the pressure of what can happen that is dictating what they are doing rather than what is actually happening in the middle.

Oct 22, 2026 03:01 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 37/0 (2.5 overs) vs NZ

India has started very well here. Sanju Samson especially looks like he has been batting on this pitch forever; he already has got the pace and bounce of the pitch right and is matching it with his timing. Well, it looks like India are not going to be troubled one bit by pace and that bit of extra bounce in these wickets. In fact, they are making the most of it.

Oct 22, 2026 02:52 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live: IND 11/0 (1.1 overs) vs NZ

We are done with the opening, and it is Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in the middle. There were a few deliveries that swung for Matt Henry, but there were also deliveries which he slipped into the slot for the batters, which both Samson and Abhishek happily obliged to take and punished with boundaries.

India Vs New Zealand Live: Bevon Jacobs during innings break

[On his 96-metre six off the first ball he faced] Yeah, I mean absolutely. It was pretty cool to get out there and get started like that and continue on what the boys at the top left on the table, so that was pretty cool. [On his approach and what he was happy with during his innings] Yeah, look, I think I was obviously surrounded by a lot of experience there with GP going off as well and keeping my head on straight, and I think just the way I tried to make sure I could keep counter-attacking and build off what the boys had started on with that platform. [On how the pitch played throughout the innings] Look, obviously I think with the new ball it's always going to offer something a little bit more. There was a bit of swing and a little bit off the surface, but obviously as the ball got older I think it became quite a true surface, and the boys really made that count and obviously we got a good total on the board. [On whether New Zealand have posted a competitive total] Yeah, absolutely. We know what to expect from the wicket and obviously the bowlers are going to have a good plan of attack to go about this next innings.

Oct 22, 2026 02:32 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 225/4 (20 overs) vs IND in Christchurch

Well, Glenn Phillips has played a blinder of an innings there. There are not too many number fours who have the quality that he possesses, and he has shown all of it here. It was an innings which certainly added extra impetus to that innings. India, on the other hand, had their moments with the ball, but once Phillips did his thing, it was all about damage control. We will be back after a short break; do stay with us.

Oct 22, 2026 02:24 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 213/4 (19.1 overs) vs IND

New Zealand have gone past 200 here, and it does look like a pretty good total at the moment. India have to be a little wary, especially at least till the first couple of overs against the new ball, as the ball will move around and they cannot afford to lose 2-3 quick wickets early, as it will make this chase extremely hard.

Oct 22, 2026 02:16 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 199/4 (18 overs) vs IND

Arshdeep Singh has run out Jacobs here; it was a nice yorker which Phillips could not get away from, but they tried to sneak a single, and Arshdeep was good with his footwork, kicked the ball onto the stumps and ran out the batter. Well, that is good: 15-20 runs saved by him. Given the way Jacobs was batting, he could have really hurt India in these final overs.

Oct 22, 2026 02:07 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 185/3 (16.4 overs) vs IND

Phillips has got to his half-century here. What a brilliant innings it has been from him. When they were here in India for the bilateral series, they had players getting starts, but midway through the innings they lost their way regularly; that did not happen today, and plenty of credit must go to Phillips for keeping things together.

Oct 22, 2026 01:57 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 161/3 (15.2 overs) vs IND

Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs are building a nice partnership here. Nice might not be the word for the Indian perspective; rather, it should be devastating. Although India have managed to pick wickets, it does seem like they are lacking a mystery spinner like Varun Chakravarthy or Kuldeep Yadav, which can be a double-edged sword too.

Oct 22, 2026 01:47 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 143/3 (13.5 overs) vs IND

Arshdeep Singh has picked up the wicket of Mitchell. Here it is: one of those shots when he gets it right; he heaved in for six, but on that occasion he did not read the pace; it was slow, and he ended up with an outside edge, which went high in the air, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar at fine-leg took the catch. India are chipping away with wickets here whenever there seems to be a partnership.

Oct 22, 2026 01:37 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 122/2 (12 overs) vs IND

Well, India has dropped a chance here, and it was Daryl Mitchell. It was a sitter to Abhishek Sharma, and he let it go through. Dropping catches has been quite costly for India in recent times, and given Mitchell's record against India, it would be a surprise if he doesn't make them pay here. It has been quite productive for New Zealand in the last couple of overs.

Oct 22, 2026 01:27 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 98/2 (10 overs) vs IND

We have reached the halfway mark here in Christchurch, and it must be said the game is more tilted towards New Zealand at this point. Although the conditions have been good for batting, the initial overs did see a bit of swing from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh, and New Zealand seamers will get the same too.

Oct 22, 2026 01:17 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 81/2 (8 overs) vs IND

Axar Patel has picked up the wicket of Finn Allen, who was really looking dangerous in the game. It was quicker and flatter, which Allen tried to flat-bat, which was the right intention, but the shot was not properly timed because of the pace. It has been a good game thus far; India have picked wickets regularly and stayed in this game nicely.

Oct 22, 2026 01:06 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 66/1 (6.1 overs) vs IND

Mayank Yadav has picked up the first wicket here. He bowled quick and fast, and it brought the results; there was pace and bounce in the delivery, which Seifert hit, and the ball took the outside edge to the keeper. India has got their breakthrough, and Daryl Mitchell is the new batter who has walked into the middle for New Zealand.

Oct 22, 2026 12:56 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 46/0 (4.1 overs) vs IND

Well how quickly things can change in this game. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has bowled a no-ball, and it has completely swung the momentum of this contest. Well, Iyer should have made that bowling change before giving Arshdeep Singh that second over; maybe bring in Axar Patel with two right-handers in the middle. He has turned to Mayank Yadav now.

Oct 22, 2026 12:47 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 18/0 (2.3 overs) vs IND

India has started very well with the ball here. They have hit their marks very well. Arshdeep Singh, who took the ball from the other end too, has been quite tidy. Both the New Zealand openers, who are known for their big hitting, have started quite cautiously, which is unlike them, but the conditions are conducive to bowling here.

Oct 22, 2026 12:38 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score: NZ 2/0 (0.5 overs) vs IND

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has started the bowling here, and there is already a bit of swing for him early in the piece. These are the conditions he will love to operate in; with a steady breeze, there will always be something for him to make use of through the evening . Already we have had a hit at the stumps from point, which is not a run-out.

India Vs New Zealand Live Score, 1st T20I: Pitch report

"One of the picturesque places in New Zealand to play cricket to kick off the summer. Now the weather has been fantastic today in Christchurch. It was a high of 25. It'll go down to 17 as the night goes on. Very, very pleasant from a player's perspective. Now in terms of this ground, Hagley is the biggest ground to play cricket in in New Zealand, which means it has huge boundaries. A big 78-metre hit back over my shoulder into the gardens, but it is a big hit also into the embankment, over 77 metres. One pocket that I'm no doubt players will look forward to is how far they can try and clear the pavilion, where it's slightly smaller in the pocket," informs Katey Martin. "Yeah, it looks a good surface. I think from a pace bowling point of view, this is one of the grounds around the world you want to turn up at for short-format cricket. It offers a little bit for the pace bowlers, a bit of pace and bounce, which I'm sure both attacks are looking forward to having a bowl on. I think both bowling attacks look forward to having a bowl and having first use of this," adds Tim Southee.

India Vs New Zealand Live Score, 1st T20I: Mitchell Santner at toss

We were going to bowl as well. Obviously, it's a fresh pitch; it looks pretty good though, so we should get some runs. (On the long international break) It's been good. It's been pretty busy, but guys have gotten back into camp and are obviously really excited for a big series. You know, I guess an all-format tour against India is always a cool one. Obviously guys have been playing overseas, training, but everyone's ready to go now. (On the playing XI) A couple of guys aren't here, but I think the depth we have at the moment is really, really good. So we've got Duffy, KJ and Conway missing out, so similar make-up to India with four seamers. (On Bevon Jacobs) You know, he's shown, I guess, what he can do for a period of time now. He's obviously got the power and is a very good middle-order player. So it's, I guess a good series for him to, you know, I guess test himself against a very good team in some good wickets.

Oct 22, 2026 12:15 PM IST
India Vs New Zealand Live Score, 1st T20I: Shreyas Iyer at toss

Obviously a quick turnaround, want to have fair idea about how the wicket will play, how much the bounce it's going to offer, and based on that we took this decision. [How has the team travelled?] I think pretty well. A lot of them, they took a while to get accustomed to the conditions and also the weather, the time difference especially. But no complaints. We are a bunch of professionals and everybody knows that in the dressing room. [Takeaways from the WI series] Well, a lot of positives, honestly, especially in our batting. I think scoring 230, 250 in almost every alternate game, it was a plus for us. And also bowling-wise, it wasn't easy to bowl on smaller ground and flat wickets, but boys showed a lot of character and that is the same attitude and approach we want to come here with. We've got two changes. So Reddy comes in for Dube and Mayank comes in for Prince.

India Vs New Zealand Live Score, 1st T20I: Sanju Samson ahead of game

[On the quick turnaround after playing the West Indies in India four days ago, his travel experience, and his excitement about playing more international cricket] Travel was really nice. I think you get that luxury of being an Indian player. We are well taken care of. Everything was very nice. The more you play, the better. I think we are at the stage of our career where we love coming in, coming out and playing for the country more. So very much excited. I think coming to New Zealand is always very refreshing. Good people, good climate, good atmosphere to come and play a great brand of cricket. [On how he manages the pressure of being an Indian cricketer now compared to three, four or five years ago] Definitely, you need to find your own patterns. You need to find your own mental state. Everyone has their own mantras to actually be at their best mental state here. I think, it definitely took me a while, but I can say that I found out my own way to enjoy myself here. [On Stephen Fleming mentioning that he took up painting during the IPL] I think I was too bored to play under him, maybe that's why I took painting. That was going really well during the IPL, but now I have many things to consider while I'm here. So yes, enjoying my time.

Bounce, movement, NZ fast bowlers: India’s six-hitting phenoms face big test

India will start multi-format New Zealand tour with a five-match T20I series. (CREIMAS FOR BCCI)

Despite public chatter around young prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, captain Shreyas Iyer affirmed that Sooryavanshi cannot currently walk into India's playing eleven due to the team's stacked and wildly successful top order. Supported by proven performers like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sai Sudharsan waiting on the bench—and with KL Rahul phased out—India's current opening trio of Sanju Samson (T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament), Ishan Kishan (No. 1 T20I batter), and Abhishek Sharma (No. 2 T20I batter) remain untouchable after driving India to a World Cup title and sustained bilateral dominance.
