The hosts, on the other hand, are coming off a gold medal at the Asian Games, and that team is increasingly looking like a force to reckon with after the poor start they had under Iyer, losing in Ireland. The batting of the team with the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and others is looking imperious.

For the West Indies, though, although they have the batting, it is their bowling which is a concern. While they have managed to put on decent scores in the ODI format, their bowlers have let them down, and the pitches will be no different for T20I’s either.

IND vs WI 1st T20I Live Cricket Score: Pitch report by Ian Bishop and Abhinav Mukund

We're all set for this T20 international, the first of the series, and I can tell you and inform you that the climatic conditions, very, very cool, very comfortable for the players. The other thing is that this outfield is superb. I just run this ball across here, and it just keeps running almost forever. Very low cut, very green grass, and it looks a picture. The grounds staff have said that they've used the anti-dew spray, so there should be no issues with dew. Now, as I move to the stumps, the dimensions are 64 square either side and 74 down the ground. I've seen the boundaries here a little bit bigger actually, but it should be entertaining today. It's not the red soil. It's not the black soil. It's something in between. What's the history? What can we expect? And that's why this has been one of the toughest pitches to read around the country. This is a mixed soil surface where one part, 25% is black, the rest of it is red soil, which means there will be bounce on offer. Less than a month ago, you had the finals of the state T20 league, where Bhuvneshwar Kumar was in action, bowling the first innings. They conceded 203 though. The batting first team won. However, history suggests in international cricket and of course in the IPL that chasing teams have a better record. This one looks like a strip which might see some assistance for the seamer initially. Spin will also play a part in this particular venue because I see that there is not much dew around. So there will be a good chance the spinners come into play later. Not a high-scoring game, like you don't like, but around 170-180 should be a good score batting first.

IND vs WI 1st T20I Live Cricket Score: What did Shai Hope say at toss

We would have bowled first as well. In India, it's usually a lot better to chase, especially due (to) dew coming into play. We cannot (defend) better. [What has been the chat inside the dressing room?] Just about being able to adapt again. Every set of conditions you come to is very different, and as a player you've got to be able to adapt to these conditions here in India again. The combinations that we have, a few guys coming in, a few guys being here for quite a while. So we're going to lean on those experienced guys and hopefully can prolong the younger guys who are coming into international cricket. But yeah, we just got to play our best cricket and hopefully can get a result. [On the playing XI] We've got six bowling options, a few all-rounders in there as well.

IND vs WI 1st T20I Live Cricket Score: What did Shreyas Iyer say at toss

We are going to bowl first, it's a mixed soil. There will be some dew as well. [Very short turnaround from the highs of a gold medal in Japan. How does it feel?] Yeah, it's obviously past and the travel was pretty hectic. I got one day at home and then overnight travel, came last night. As you mentioned, quick turnaround, but right now in the zone, thinking about today's game and obviously it's going to be a great challenge. [Chat inside the dressing room, given that they came very strong in that ODI series, especially in the final game?] It's (the series) definitely been fabulous throughout, and if you see in the last couple of years, they have dominated T20 cricket as well, irrespective of how they play. They are unpredictable, but at the same time they know what they are doing. They have got brilliant batting in Shai Hope and a few other batsmen and all-rounders in the team. So, yeah, as I mentioned, we're looking forward for a great challenge and great contest. [Playing XI?] So Ravi (Bishnoi), Nitish (Reddy), Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) and one more is sitting out. I can't remember the name, but yeah, Prince (Yadav) is not playing.

IND vs WI 1st T20I Live Cricket Score: Morne Morkel on Sooryavanshi

“If he is not getting that game time, he is still on a bus, in the dugout, in the hotel with guys with a lot of experience,” Morkel told reporters ahead of India’s first T20I against the West Indies. “I think, with him, sharing that dressing room and talking to guys, just actually watching how the guys go through their processes and how they set up will be key.

“So I always challenge him. I say, ‘watch what this guy is doing in training. How does he face his first 15 balls when the wicket is tough? What sort of game plan has he come up with?’

Shreyas Iyer looks to go higher and higher after Asian Games gold

During the final T20I in Southampton, England posted a massive 257/3—led by Jos Buttler and Harry Brook—and handed India a 56-run defeat to complete a 0–4 series sweep. Captain Shreyas Iyer's tactical struggles were evident when he delayed bowling Shivam Dube until the 19th over with England already at 225/1 (Dube took 2 wickets for 22 runs). The loss marked Iyer's sixth defeat in seven matches as captain, highlighting a grim low point in his early leadership stint. (Read more from Shanakar Narayan)
