· The Indian Express · JoinDay 7 of the Asian Games has begun on a bright note for the Indian contingent in Nagoya after Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet claimed India’s second gold medal, this one coming in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Just minutes before this, the Indian trio of Niraj Kumar, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and Rudrankksh Patil claimed a silver in 50m 3P men’s team event.
Meanwhile, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale entered the mixed doubles semi-finals, thus assuring India its first mixed doubles medal in table tennis at the Asian Games after eight years (it’s also India’s fourth Asian Games medal from table tennis in history.) Shortly afterwards, Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar assured themselves of medal in the mixed doubles squash. The India men’s and women’s kabaddi teams will take on Thailand and Nepal respectively and look to book spots in their respective final while weightlifter Nirupama Devi will be in action in the women’s 61kg.

Table tennis: Manush Shah-Diya Chitale beat world No. 4 Wong Chun-Ting and Doo Hoi Kem to enter semis, thus assuring a medal! This would be India’s second mixed doubles medal at the Asiad after Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra bagged bronze in Jakarta eight years back, and only Indian TT’s fourth overall at the Games.
Squash: Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar assured themselves of medal in the mixed doubles squash by making it to the semis with an 11-3, 11-5 win over David Pelino and Jemyca Aribado. This will be the sixth Asian Games medal for 40-year-old Joshna. She already has a haul of two silver and three bronze medals at the continental event.
Swimming: Sajan Prakash qualified for the Men’s 200m Butterfly with a time of 2:00.94 from the Heats.
Table tennis: Yashaswini Ghorpade and Harmeet Desai lost their mixed doubles quarter-finals to China's Lin Shidong and Kuai Man by 5-11, 10-12, 9-11
Badminton: India's mixed doubles pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto have brushed aside the Maldives pairing of Aminath Abdul Razzaq and NIbal Ahmed 21-8, 21-7 in the first round.
Surfing: Indian surfers Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash finished at the bottom in their respective heats in women's shortboard round 1. Gayen ended last among three athletes in heat three with a score of 3.84 while Kamali scored 3.74 in heat 5 which featured one more participant in Japan's Mirai Ikeda.

Asian Games 2026, Day 7 Live: Know your medallists
Kamaljeet, from Sulkha, Rewari, Haryana, is an Indian pistol shooter specialising in 10m Air Pistol and 50m Pistol. He started shooting in 2019 after an injury forced him to give up his track-and-field athletics career. Coming from a middle-class family, Kamaljeet faced financial challenges during the early stages of his shooting career. He managed his own expenses for coaching, course fees and competitions, and there were times when he considered quitting the sport. Despite these difficulties, his parents consistently supported him and provided whatever was needed for him to continue. Over the next two to three years, his persistence helped him overcome the financial and sporting challenges and establish himself as a competitive shooter. Kamaljeet made a strong mark in the junior international circuit, winning gold in the 50m Pistol Junior Men event at the 2023 ISSF Junior World Championships in Changwon, Korea. He subsequently progressed into the senior international circuit, competing in both 10m Air Pistol and 50m Pistol.

Suruchi Inder Singh is an Indian 10m Air Pistol shooter from Jhajjar, Haryana, born on 28 April 2006. She took up shooting at the age of 13 after initially being encouraged to explore wrestling, following her family’s strong sporting background. She began her training at the Guru Dronacharya Shooting Academy in Bhiwani under coach Suresh Singh. Suruchi made a remarkable breakthrough on the senior international circuit in 2025, winning three consecutive individual ISSF World Cup gold medals in Buenos Aires, Lima and Munich. She also won gold in the mixed team event at the Lima World Cup. Her outstanding 2025 season culminated in a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup Final in Doha, where she set a Junior World Record of 245.1 in the 10m Air Pistol final. In 2026, she continued her strong form by winning gold at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, making her one of India’s leading international 10m Air Pistol shooters. Manav-Manush, tipped as India's biggest medal hopes in TT at the Asiad, suffer defeat in their first outing. 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11 is the scoreline and while it's a disappointing turn for the Gujju bespectacled duo, it's always hard to predict how two elite singles players will fare when paired scratch. Harimoto and Shinozuka are ranked 4th and 18th in singles and Manav-Manush just couldn't match up.
Nevertheless, Manush will be back alongside Diya Chitale for the mixed doubles semis later today, and singles competitions remain too.

At the age of 10, Manush Shah started playing Table Tennis just for fun during a family vacation and developed it into a hobby. As a teenager, he started developing more interest in Table Tennis. He got focused and pursued the sport to make it into the Indian Team. Currently, Manush trains at the SDAT AKG Table Tennis Development Centre in Chennai. Manush is the youngest Indian Table Tennis Player to make it to the Top 100 of the ITTF World Rankings. He has represented India at the Asian Junior Championships and the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. In Dec 2025, Manush with her Mixed Doubles partner Diya Chitale became the first Indian ever to qualify for WTT Finals in Mixed Doubles. Asian Games 2026, Day 7 Live: Swimming update
Sajan Prakash, Rishabh Das and Utkarsh Patil qualified for the finals of their respective events at the Asian Games here on Friday.
Prakash, competing in his last Asian Games, clocked 2:00.94 to qualify for the men's 200m butterfly final in sixth place.
The duo of Das and Patil, on the other hand, made the 200m backstroke final.
Das was particularly fast, finishing the heats in overall fourth place with a time 2:00.53 while Patil, who clocked 2:02.13, was ninth.
The top 10 swimmers across heats move to the final.
However, there was disappointment in the men's 400, freestyle event with both Dhanshan Shashikumar and Aneesh Gowda failing to make the final.
While Gowda finished 17th with a time of 3:58.08, Shashikumar signed off in 18th place, clocking 3:58.73.
Dhanush Suresh too failed to make the final's cut finishing a disappointing 21st (28.40) in the 50m breaststroke heats.

Asian Games 2026, Day 7 Live: Surfing update
Indian surfers Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash finished at the bottom in their respective heats in women's shortboard round 1 as surfing made its Asian Games debut here on Friday.
Gayen ended last among three athletes in heat three with a score of 3.84 while Kamali scored 3.74 in heat 5 which featured one more participant in Japan's Mirai Ikeda.
Both Indian women will be back in action later in the day for second-round heats.
Gayen and Kamali competed in the opening round heats at Pacific Long Beach in Tahara.
Kishore Kumar Anbarashu and Sivaraj Babu will lead India's challenge in the men's shortboard, with their opening-round heats scheduled later in the day.
Surfing is being held at Pacific Long Beach from September 25 to 28, with September 29 kept as a reserve day.
India's four-member surfing squad comprises Gayen and Kamali in the women's event and Anbarashu and Babu in the men's competition.
The sport is among the new additions to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

The object of dressage is the development of the horse into a happy athlete through harmonious education. Horses have played an important role in human history with their involvement in transportation, trade, agriculture, and warfare. It is estimated that the animals were being ridden by around 3500 BC, and among the first ancient peoples to use horses for fighting and hunting were the Hittites, the Assyrians, and the Babylonians in the second millennium BC. Horse sport events such as chariot racing featured at the ancient Olympic Games.
Dressage has its roots in the writings of Greek military leader and philosopher Xenophon, who discouraged the use of force in horse training. In 1733, French riding master Francois Robichon de La Gueriniere’s ‘Ecole de Cavalerie’ [School of Cavalry] also detailed how a horse could be trained without being forced into submission, and helped to lay the foundations of modern dressage.
Jumping’s origins can be traced to the 18th century. The Inclosure Acts of England and Wales saw the introduction of more fences to the landscape, and any riders going across country became required to clear such fences on a regular basis. The earliest jumping competitions were steeplechases over natural obstacles, with formal showjumping introduced at the 1865 Royal Dublin Society Show.
Eventing was originally a test of all the skills required by a horse and rider in battle, encompassing the obedience of dressage, the agility of jumping, and the stamina, endurance and speed of cross country.
Equestrian sport was first included at the modern Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, with jumping and driving events contested. The 1912 Games in Stockholm was the first Olympic Games to feature dressage and eventing. The establishment of the International Equestrian Federation [FEI] followed in 1921.

We're now into the seventh day of action from Aichi-Nagoya and India is still chasing their second gold medal at the continental games. India's overall medals tally rose to 17. China, by comparison, are on 130 medals, 80 of them golds.
Seema wins Asian Games bronze her mother knows nothing about
Seema’s mother thinks she is in India.
She has no idea her daughter is in Japan, or that on Thursday night Seema was standing on the start line of the biggest race of her career, alongside Olympic champion Winfred Yavi and Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka. “I didn’t tell her because she is old and gets very tense,” Seema said after winning bronze in the women’s 10,000m. “So she still thinks I am in India. Maybe she will find out now.”
There was little time to think about home once the gun went.
