India vs Namibia T20 World Cup 2026 Match highlights: Varun Chakarvarthy picked up three wickets to help India beat Namibia by 93 runs. Ishan Kishan’s 24-ball 61 took India to 209/9 from 20 overs after Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus won the toss and opted to bat first.

On Thursday, apart from Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya scored a timely 28-ball 52 and later picked up two wickets in the second innings.

Earlier, India kicked off their World Cup campaign with a win over the USA altough there were a few times when the crowd in Wankhede had their hearts in their mouths, but a sublime batting effort from the skipper and collective bowling performance took India over the line. India will take on Pakistan in their third group game against Pakistan in Colombo.

"I think pretty good game for everyone. I think it was not an easy wicket to bat on, but the way Ishan, Sanju started, it didn't look like it was a difficult wicket. And then the partnership between Shivam and Hardik, the way they batted after losing two-three quick wickets, I think it was very commendable. (on the pitch) I think the ball was stopping a little bit, but I don't want to take any credit away from all the Namibian bowlers. They bowled really well. I think they came out with fire. They had their plans, executed really well, but very impressed with their bowling as well. (at one stage even 230 was possible) I mean, after 6-7 overs, it felt like we might go past 240, 250 as well. But then it's a game of cricket. Fantastic leveler. We lost two-three quick wickets, but then we had a good partnership and a good finish at the end as well. (with the ball in the middle-overs) I mean, yeah, it was a big plus to see Bumrah bowl quota of all the four overs. Good to have him back in the side. He's all set to go for the next game as well. And also Varun Chakravarthy, the way they bowl in partnerships together with Axar Patel, I think it's a difficult combination to play. (fully fit Pandya gives a lot of flexibility) Absolutely. I mean, with the new ball, with the old ball, and he also bowls in death overs whenever needed. And the way he bats, I think it's a big boost for the team coming in that situation, having that positive mindset and taking that MoM today in a crucial game. I think it's a good thing for the team. (pretty happy with things are going?) Absolutely. I mean, every game is important. And yeah, we did start a little scratchy, but then I think we are on the road."

"Yeah, I thought, after, you know that the powerplay that we had, that it's quite a small ground, maybe a bit of dew settling might make it tough for the spinners in the back half of that innings. So yeah, we really felt after 26 overs of cricket that we're in with a chance, and unfortunately that spell of Varun broke the back of our chase. (on their death bowling) Yeah, I think so. I think that death spell as well from Smit coming back, you know, after the powerplay had leaked a bit, I think that's, that's the kind of specialization we want in our team. It's always been a matter of getting the top and bottom ends of our innings to a higher standard to compete with these bigger teams. (on the game against USA) Yeah, I think that's perhaps slow conditions in Chennai might suit us, and I think there's still a lot in the tank. I don't think we're playing at 100% now. So we'd like to see that happen on this tour still. We've got a lot of firepower in our batting, but we're not quite getting enough balls under the belt to set that foundation to show that firepower. "Yeah, definitely, just enjoying the sport. Had a good couple of months to prepare and, you know, get the rhythm and, you know, get the body right. Touchwood everything is going well. (on his batting) Yes, I've always taken pride in my batting as an all-rounder. So whenever I get an opportunity, I make sure that both the skills are managed rightly. And yeah, I always mention it quite earlier as well that batting is always close to my heart. And when that comes, it's a, you know, it even adds more sugar to the cake. (on his body) Body has been fantastic. I've always mentioned it takes a lot of hard work, which I cherish. But, you know, playing for the country has always been a pride, always been my number one priority. It just needs extra hard work, which I do. A lot of work goes behind the scene where I'm kind of out and kind of go into army, army sort of a camp where I do morning, evening sessions, which kind of keeps me going. And whenever I come, just before a big series or a big tournament, I kind of give myself a month or something to go and do kind of those routine, make sure I eat well, make sure I sleep well, make sure my habits are good. And you know, it gives me always a great rhythm. And at the same point of time, body gives me immense support while playing. (on the variety of their bowling) Yes, I think that's the strength of this team. We have a lot of options. We have fast bowling covered, we have spin covered. There are days when fast bowlers will come in the party when the wicket offers. And at the same point of time, spinners have been in the middle have been fantastic. Varun, Axar, Kuldeep, whenever he's got opportunity. I think they've been fantastic. At the same point of time, whenever the fast bowlers get opportunity, they've been fantastic. And I think they have done a tremendous job. (on the pitch today) Yes, I think two back-to-back games in the World Cup has been a little, I wouldn't say batting-friendly. We had to adapt. I think today, even when I went to bat, it felt like the wicket was holding a bit. It was keeping low as well. But yeah, you know, all these wickets in big tournaments, you just adapt and, you know, let your skill set work and understanding the game. And yeah, it was different, but I would, we would like a little bit more flatter wickets."

Well, it was not a complete performance from India, but it was enough to thump Namibia. Apart from Varun Chakarvarthy, the rest of the bowling attack was functional. Could it have been better, yes, but today it did seem like bowlers are still getting their loads up. As per the batting after the collapse against the USA on Saturday, today, they have fallen apart again at the back end of the innings, which is something they might have a look at. As per Namibia, the team has been pretty decent; most teams in this tournament coming up against India would have taken a pasting such as this. They have played well in patches, of course, the lack of understanding in conditions was on display, but they do have some canny players who are quite smart. Maybe against other teams, they pinch a game or two. Having said that Netherlands thrashed them in the opening game a couple of days ago. They still have Pakistan to face, and the USA may have better luck in those games.

Namibia, for the majority of this game, did a pretty decent job, but it is that mystery spin that tricked them, and that is something which will be a challenge for associate nations. They can practice pace with these modern-slingers, but picking mystery spinners from hand needs to be cultivated from an early age into their games. Chakarvarthy has picked up two wickets in no time here. First, it was Eaton who came down the track but never reached the pitch of the ball and tried to play inside-out through the covers and ended up giving the catch to a fielder over there, and then Smit came in and tried to play a cross-batted shot of the very first ball, but could not make any contact and lost his stumps. Varun Chakarvarthy has picked up the second wicket here, and it is the opener Steenkamp he tried to drive the ball through the covers, the shape he got into the end, the ball and his bat were in different postcode. Did seem like a googly from Chakarvarthy, which was pitched on good length and went in. He will be a big challenge for Namibia here on this sluggish wicket. It is a pretty good start for Namibia altough they have lost a wicket, they manage to get the boundaries away. Arshdeep Singh has been a bit on the shorter side, and Steenkamp did get hold of him pubishing for three boundaries. Interesting thing, though, that Surya has not opted to bowl Bumrah in the powerplay at all. Usually, we do see him coming in the first six in the later part, but here he is coming after the power play, which is a bit hard to understand; it is the seventh over the innings, which is neither here nor there.

Arshdeep did manage to pick up Frylinck. He was hitting that shot pretty well and got a six early on, but that delivery from Arshdeep was knuckleball and was dug into the surface, and the left-hander trying to hit the ball into the mid-wicket region got beaten for the pace and played the shot pretty early, and the fielder there, Rinku, completed the catch. And post the wicket, guess what Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav has turned to Shivam Dube that is a pretty smart move on this wicket. Dube tends to dig the ball in the surface.

India has refrained from pitching the ball up here early on. They have bowled back-of-the-length in this intial three overs. It does seem like India does read this as a slower surface, and by pitching the ball up, they might not extract anything from this surface. Also, it is interesting that Surya has not given the new ball to Jasprit Bumrah, which was a feature during the series against New Zealand, and it seems like Hardik and Arshdeep are going to be the first two choices for Surya through the tournament unless Siraj comes in.

Hardik Pandya has taken the new ball for India, and it must be one of those things with ends. Arshdeep Singh might want to bowl from the other end. There has been no swing we have seen early on in the game, and there will not be much either now. He does have a loopy bumper, does Arshdeep, which will be quite handy on this wicket. If something Namibia could have done better in the evening session that should have try and bowl a few slower ones in the powerplay we might see India do that they know these conditions well.

"It's a bit quiet at the moment here at the Arun Jaitley Stadium but with India playing again tonight this place is going to rock. It'll be absolutely fever pitch, and it'll be a great night out, whatever happens for the men from Namibia. Now in terms of where this pitch is located, it's a slight bias if I'm standing at this end here to my right, which is a slightly longer boundary. The left is just cut around 59 to 60 over there. There's a hit of about 73 metres down the ground. But the interesting thing for me, because the batters are so good at using ramp shots and scoop shots, these are quite small, these dimensions down here (behind the wicket). I think I'll try and get this one right. I'm going to go the same way, Smithy. It looks flat. It looks well. There's a nice little sheen on it as well. I think it's going to come through nicely. I don't think we're gonna see a huge amount of that bounce, but I think we'll see it coming on to the bat quite nicely. I covered the game here a couple of days ago, but it was a day game, and we started at 11 o'clock, and there was a little bit of moisture. And because of that, we saw a little bit holding in the surface and a little bit of turn. Now, there's 2.3 degrees of turn in that first game, which actually topped the list of all the venues we've had so far. But that is just a small sample size, and I think that was down to the moisture in the surface on the morning. Good surface, a few cracks that you can see, but they're not moving. Get your bat out. The other thing to look out for is dew. Evening dew. This is a night game, and I covered a lot of India versus New Zealand not long ago, and dew was a factor when it came to the toss. We'll wait and see. There's a bit of a breeze around that night, so it'll negate it a wee bit. But there's a lot of things to consider for this match."
