Jake Paul jabs his way past Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in ‘flawless’ performance
by Guilherme Cruz · MMA FIGHTINGJake Paul controlled and dominated former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for an easy 10-round unanimous decision Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif. to improve to 12-1 in boxing.
Paul, who was visibly bigger than the 39-year-old veteran, was two steps ahead the entire time. It took three rounds for Chavez Jr. to finally land something, and it was never meaningful. Paul couldn’t hurt Chavez Jr., but his jabs and uppercuts were enough to keep the veteran away from range and unable to get things going.
Chavez Jr. only found success in the ninth round, attacking the body with a left hook and then an uppercut. He needed a finish in the tenth and managed to connect good right hands that had the crowd on their feet, but Paul wasn’t going away. In the end, all three judges scored it in favor of the younger boxer.
“It was flawless,” Paul said of his performance after the match. “I think I only got hit 10 times. Really, he just survived. I thought I did great. Going 10 rounds against a former world champion who’s never been stopped. He’s in there with Canelo [Alvarez], all of these guys, and I embarrassed him like that. Easy work.”
Paul said he wants to get back in the ring again “as soon as possible”, and listed Gervonta Davis, Anthony Joshua, Gilberto Ramírez, Badou Jack and Tommy Fury as possible opponents for him. He wouldn’t pick a favorite, though, and made sure to give props to Chavez Jr. for making it 10 rounds against him.
“He’s a tough, tough guy,” said Paul, who added another victory over a former champion after defeating legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson in his previous appearance. “[Chavez Jr.] has never been stopped. He’s a Mexican warrior. I respect Mexican warriors, I respect Mexico, but I’m also a warrior and I came out on top tonight.”
