Muhammad vs. Della Maddalena took place May 10 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Belal Muhammad (24-4, 1 no-contest) and Jack Della Maddalena (18-2) squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on pay-per-view on ESPN+.

Official decision: Jack Della Maddalena def. Belal Muhammad via UD (48-47 x2, 49-46)

Round 1

The third man for the main event is referee Jason Herzog.

As expected, Della Maddalena immediately comes forward. He’s testing Muhammad with his jab. Della Maddalena slips a right hand in. Glancing right from Della Maddalena. Nice jab by Muhammad. They exchange jabs. Big overhand right by Muhammad. Canelo hands!

Straight left from Muhammad. Della Maddalena flicks out a head kick, that got a reaction. The challenger scores with a right hand down the middle. Outside leg kick by Della Maddalena.

Della Maddalena lands a left hand. He could be taking this round. With just under 90 seconds left, Muhammad goes for his first takedown and Della Maddalena successfully defends. Muhammad manages to land a punch off of it. Good jab by Muhammad, followed by a right hand. Muhammad goes to the body. They start slugging it out and Della Maddalena lands a hard uppercut, Muhammad just absorbed that somehow.

Round 2

Muhammad’s jab keeps him out of danger early. He connects with a right. Della Maddalena staying patient, though he’s allowing Muhammad to score. Definite uptick in activity from the champ.

Quick 1-2 by Muhammad. Right hand from Della Maddalena scores as Muhammad circles away from the power. Muhammad showing good hand speed. Della Maddalena just throws a lead right in and he connects. Another good right by Maddalena. Muhammad rips a kick to the body.

Step-in uppercut by Muhammad. He’s not backing down from the striking challenge Della Maddalena represents, but JDM seems a step ahead on the feet. Della Maddalena punches the body, Muhammad answers with a body kick. Sneaky right by Muhammad.

Muhammad changes levels and goes for the takedown at almost the same time he attempted in Round 1. We sense a strategy. Della Maddalena stuffs it and his takedown defense has been perfect so far.

Short left from Della Maddalena lands. Della Maddalena punches the body, but Muhammad makes him pay with stiff right. Straight left from Della Maddalena lands. Muhammad jabs him, they’re trading shots. Della Maddalena with a wild spin kick attempt.

Round 3

Della Maddalena sets the tone with an accurate low kick and a jab. Big right hand from Della Maddalena as Muhammad backs up against the fence. The champion responds with a couple of good punches. Jab from Muhammad.

Della Maddalena flicks several jabs out, daring Muhammad to make a move. Good jab by Muhammad. A 1-2 from Muhammad and he’s looking good on the feet right now. Della Maddalena’s jab is scoring as well, though. Muhammad’s striking defense definitely in question at the moment.

Another right lands for Della Maddalena. Muhammad hasn’t looked bad on the feet at all, but his lack of takedown attempts is puzzling, to say the least. Muhammad pressing forward, but he walks right into a Della Maddalena straight punch. Left hook by Della Maddalena. He pops Muhammad with a couple of straight lefts. Pressure from Muhammad and a late takedown attempt, but he’s not going to get much with seconds remaining in the round. In fact, Della Maddalena reverses and goes for a takedown! Wacky.

Round 4

Muhammad looks to pressure and once again eats a right hand. Muhammad scores with a left hook. He’s doing the right thing, but is it too little, too late? Stiff combination from Della Maddalena tests Muhammad’s chin. Muhammad cracks him with a 1-2. Della Maddalena catches a circling Muhammad with a right hook. Muhammad gets inside and lands an uppercut, he wants a takedown but Della Maddalena’s balance keeps him up.

They’re both throwing and Muhammad is absorbing a lot of clean punches. Muhammad in on a takedown and he finally gets Della Maddalena to a knee. Well-timed knee by Muhammad. Della Maddalena methodical with his grappling defense as he works back to a standing position and turns Muhammad to the fence. Wow.

Head kick by Muhammad, then a good jab. He has the volume, but is Della Maddalena consistently landing the harder shots? Scorecards could raise some eyebrows, that’s for sure.

Della Maddalena stuffs another takedown. Muhammad goes for a body lock, Della Maddalena shakes him off. Muhammad lands a jab, but Della Maddalena answers with a counter right.

Round 5

Despite how my scorecard looks, but three of those rounds were close. Della Maddalena can’t be sure he has this one in the bag and Muhammad can still scrape out a decision with a strong finish. Would be nice to see either man score a finish and close the door on any controversy.

Muhammad showing off that incredible gas tank as he comes forward non-stop. But Della Maddalena keeps tagging him. This is not effective pressure!

Della Maddelana scores with two more punches, but Muhammad connects with a right hand that Della Maddalena definitely felt. Deep shot by Muhammad, Della Maddalena looks to scramble, but Muhammad finally manages to establish an effective top position in his opponent’s half guard.

Muhammad manages to do plenty of damage before Della Maddalena works his way up from bottom position. They’re back on the feet with a little over two minutes to work. Who wants this more.

Lead elbow by Della Maddalena, Muhammad not deterred, so Della Maddalena cracks him with another one. Left hand on the money for Della Maddalena. He’s looking for a finish and Muhammad has to clinch up to slow the onslaught.

Big throw by Muhammad, Della Maddalena still fighting, still scrambling. Muhammad punching away as Della Maddalena gets back to the feet. Wild round.
