CAF reverses decision, confirms AFCON will remain a biennial tournament

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its earlier decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, confirming that the tournament will continue to be staged biennially.

The CAF Executive Committee unanimously endorsed the move, bringing back the competition’s traditional two-year schedule after previously announcing plans to switch to a four-year cycle.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe explained that the decision followed a review of the proposed Africa Nations League, which was expected to take over as the continent’s major competition held every two years.

However, the project would need several years to generate the financial resources required to support the development of African football and ensure CAF competitions remain globally competitive and financially sustainable.

Motsepe said the decision was made to protect and promote the interests of African football and the confederation’s 54 member associations, while also taking into account African players who represent clubs outside the continent.

“The decision by the CAF EXCO that the CAF AFCON should take place every Two Years was based on advancing, protecting and promoting the interest of African Football and CAF’s 54 Member Associations,” Motsepe said.

The next edition of the AFCON is scheduled for 2027 and will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The following tournaments are expected to take place in 2028, 2031 and 2033.

The 2030 edition will not be held to prevent a scheduling clash with the FIFA World Cup, maintaining the approach of avoiding overlaps between major international football tournaments.
