Medeama and Nations FC cash out big after CAF inter-club exit

The financial support is part of CAF’s efforts to give more help to clubs taking part in its continental competitions, including teams that are eliminated in the opening round.
Medeama, the defending Ghana Premier League champions, were knocked out of the Champions League after a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Congolese giants TP Mazembe.
The Ghanaian champions lost the first leg 1-0 at TNA Park before Mazembe secured a 3-1 win in the return leg in Lubumbashi.
Mazembe will face Zambia’s Red Arrows in the second preliminary round.
Nations FC, meanwhile, ended their first continental campaign after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Mali’s FC Diarra in the Confederation Cup.
The Ghana FA Cup holders lost the first leg 1-0 in Bamako before drawing 1-1 in the return match at the Accra Sports Stadium.
FC Diarra will now play ASKO Kara in the second preliminary round as they continue their push for a place in the group stage.
The early exits mean Ghana will have no representative in the group stage of either the 2026-27 CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup.
Medeama will now focus on defending their Ghana Premier League title, while Nations FC will turn their attention to the Division One League after their historic first appearance in continental competition.
Despite their disappointing exits, the $100,000 payment will give both clubs a financial boost and help cover some of the costs of their continental campaigns.
