The Football Ferns have qualified for the 2027 Fifa World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Papua New Guinea at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.

Papua New Guinea's resolute defence, New Zealand's lack of final touch, and the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee meant that despite the hosts peppering the PNG goal for most of the first half of the match they went into the break deadlocked at nil all.

The Football Ferns had several gilt-edged chances in the first 45 minutes that were sent high, wide or into the arms of goalkeeper Betty Sam.

Attempts went off the crossbar, over the top of goal and twice goals were disallowed for off-side.

Straight after the break on a slippery surface, New Zealand players lost their footing in front of goal and still could not locate the back of the net.

Katie Kitching finally opened the scoring with a header in the 55th minute.

Despite getting the job done, it will not have been as convincing as many would have predicted given New Zealand's dominance throughout the rest of the qualification pathway that started in November.

New Zealand join hosts Brazil, and Australia, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Philippines as eight of the 32 nations have now locked in their place for the tournament kicking off on 24 June 2027.

Papua New Guinea get a second chance to qualify through the 10-team inter-confederation playoff which kicks off in November.
