The third smallest nation at the tournament stood their ground with a disciplined defensive performance against the 2024 European champions.

40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was particularly impressive, making multiple brilliant saves and commanding his backline to keep a clean sheet on their debut.

Supercomputer predicts World Cup winner

According to The Analyst, Opta's supercomputer has updated its prediction for the 2026 FIFA World Cup winner after Spain's draw with Cape Verde.

Spain went into the match with a 15.96% chance of winning the World Cup, but the draw dipped their chances of winning by 0.99% to 14.97%.

La Roja remains favourite to win the tournament, and with Lamine Yamal, who made a cameo off the bench fit and ready, they will hit full throttle against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Luis de la Fuente reacts after draw

Spanish head coach Luis de la Fuente was frustrated with the game and even though he believes they should have won, he pointed out areas his team should improve.

“We have to continue with the same idea, while improving and showing more finesse. Today is one of those games where you create a lot, but maybe you lack the freshness you need in these types of games,” he said as quoted by The Athletic.
“They are a very organised team. They sat in a low block with practically 10 defenders in front of their area. It’s very difficult to find spaces like that. But we managed it.
“At times maybe we lacked a bit more circulation of the ball, to generate more spaces. But when the ball does not want to go in, it won’t go in. There were shots, chances, we tried to resolve the game, but we know this is very difficult. All games at a World Cup are difficult to win.”

Spain captain Rodri praised the team’s effort and admitted that failure to take their chances cost them victory against the debutants.

"The team tried, I think we had good fluidity. It's about fine-tuning those chances we created, because against a team that sits back so much you're not going to have many, and you know you have to take them. It's that simple,” he said.
